What's so different about the Bach Omega Trombone as compared to other
Bach trombones?

The Omega is an intermediate level horn meant for playing in high school..
It's Bach's attempt to make as much $$off the consumer as possible...

I bought my daughter one, as she was entering H.S., because @ $800.00,
it was a pretty good buy. Then, a few months later, I bought myself a
TR-158 Holton, because @ $800.00 ( demo, shown only at the Midwest
Clinic ), it was a good buy.
3 months old, the Omega is in the case, near me, and I hear, " TINK ". I
opened the case, and one of the handslide braces, was broken! One more
month, and a inner slide tube (never soldered) slid out of the receiver!
Back to the dealer we went, showed them, came home with a different
Omega. I thought, when I play-tested it, something just wasn't right,
but I just ignored it, thinking my ear was being overcritical, that day.
Melissa comes home from band, and said the whole band had to tune down
to her pitch, because her new Omega, was so flat! AAAGGGHHH !!! Back to
the dealer, again, they all see me walk in, and roll their eyes back in
their heads, " NOW WHAT? " he asks.
" PLAYS FLAT ! " I replied.
"SHE NEEDS TO USE AIRRRRR"
"GIMME THAT HORN" I snapped!
Well, with the tuning slide all the way in, the horn was absolute
centered on pitch on stafftop Bb.
" NOT GOOD! " I said. "I play, and teach non-bumper 1st position. It's
the only way she can play in tune! "
" WELL, SHE'LL HAVE TO LEARN THE RIGHT WAY! " ( this guy thought I was a
hobbist )
We went round & round, and I went home with a 3rd Omega, who's skin
started falling off, a week later.
By this time, I somehow, lost my TR-158, and it became my Omega that I
was trying to get right, just once! That .525" bore just wasn't right
for anything I tried to use it for. It centered ok, the tone was nice,
and the slide was greased lightnin', but just didn't shoot rowdy enough
for jazz combo, and the tone was a little thin for symphonic works. I
practically gave that horn away a few years ago, never got my Holton
back, but I now have a quite different taste in my mouth, about the
Selmer Bach Company as they wouldn't back their product, at all, even
when the whole horn was bare of anything shiny, 10 months old, they
called it normal ware and tear! The Holton is 7 years old, has been
played 3 hours a day (not by me!), and is flawless!

You Bach junkies ought to shop around!
I LOVE MY BONES!!

Heaven is that place, where everybody loves TROMBONES !

Amen...Bach's quality has been awful (I had a similar bad experience with a
42K), and they don't seem to give a rip about follow up. The Omega is a
poorly designed horn to begin with...try the Benge 165 if you're looking for
an intermediate horn.
