who are - apart from Johnson, Winding, Mangelsdorff - your favourite
trombone inspirations.

Don Lusher - crystal clear articulation throughout the range, lovely
technique. Big sound on small trombones (used to play King 2B, I see he
plays Yamaha these days).

Dudley Bright - principal of LSO. A personal friend who has the most compact
embouchure I know, no visible jaw movement in the most difficult passages.
From altissimo to pedals the chops just sit there on the mouthpiece.

Ray Premru - nuff said I would have thought.

I really like Bob Brookmeyer. Although a valve trombone player, his skill an
improviser I really enjoy.
I like Jim Pugh and Dave Taylor a lot, very inspirational when I was 14 and
got a CD of both these guys.

As for 'straight' players I do enjoy players local to me like Alwyn Green -
Bass Trombone as well as US Guy Ron Barron.

There are plenty of good ones, but none have achieved much regognition
in the mainstream. Steve Turre and Conrad Herwig have something to
offer and Wattrous has inspired a lot of players.

Personally the one who inspired me the most has been Ron Wilkins, who is
a fairly young player based in San Antonio. I've seen him live up close
on several occasions. I always thought I was a better than mediocre
player. When I saw and heard him, I immediately realized how huge the
gap was between where I was and where the instrument could be played.
I've been practicing more these past 3 years than at any time in my
first 35 years playing. That's inspiration.

There are many players who are supremely talented like this. Young
trombonists owe it to themselves to get out and see them live. It may
change your whole outlook about the level of commitment required to
really excel. Plus they need our support.

Bill Watrous, Ray Gillette, Sandy Weishaupt, Frank Rosolino, Urbie
Green, Ian McDougall.

I can't stand Mangelsdorff's playing. It just grates on me.

Is this a recent appointment? I thought Ian Bousfield was
LSO principal. Dudley had been principal of the Philharmonia
for many years. Is he no longer there?

Not just in the David, he also didn't do the greatest job on the Morceau. he
consistently held notes too short, and didn't have enough expression/dynamic
range.

First entry in the "David " was the daddy, splatted Eb, and out of tune on
the rest of the phrase. Great playing in the Bourgeois and the Langford and
lighter pieces though.

One of my first major trombone inspirations was my former teacher, Davis
Shuman. Another teacher was Jack Chadwick (former trombonist with the LSO)
. Then there was a gentleman I had the pleasure of performing with many
years ago named Frank Rosolino. Shuman and Rosolino were incredible
players, each in their own fields. I didn't get to hear Chadwick play when
he was in his prime. He was still an excellent trombonist when I studied
with him (and played with him in the Santa Barbara Symphony) some years
after he had retired from professional playing. There have been others as
well, but those are probably my three primary inspirations.

Chris Mowat - For that old Elkhart Conn, rich warm sound and his musicality.
John Iveson - For his flexibility and good musical taste.
Andrew Berryman - Great sound and great technique.
Ian Bousfield - Need I say anything?
Richard Tyack - Great bass trombone sound.
Tom Winthorpe - One of the finest 2nd Trombonists around.
Jay Friedman - For sheer volume!

I have heard a few good trombonists in my time, but probably the best is
Nick Hudson. His playing is so precise, so clean and yet one of the
sweetest sounds I've ever heard.

Hopefully Nick will see this and send me my cheque. there are a lot of
players out there who are very very good. When you get to the level of
these players: Hudson, Rosalino, Lindberg, Bousfield, Lusher, etc. there is
really so very little to separate them other than personal preferences.

my 2 cents

Ian

There is a compilation CD that was released last month that is well
worth checking out. Features Joe Alessi, Ronald Barron, Scott Hartman,
Alastair Kay, Dave Steinmeyer, Harry Watters and is a great collection
of performances by these guys. It's called "Spectacular Trombonists" on

Maybe not the "purest" or most technically brilliant, but there's something
undeniably captivating about Curtis Fuller's work with Blakey. I think he's
frequently overlooked. I had the opportunity to meet him a few years ago at
a gig he did with Clark Terry. Both are fine gentlemen and great players...

I also had the chance to share the stage briefly with Wycliffe Gordon at a
local club where I was subbing for a local sax player. Very gracious guy
with monstrous chops and a deep respect for the roots of jazz.... A real
treat...

What can I say I'm a sucker for the Oldies. Teagarden, Dorsey, Higginsbotham
(sic), Brown.
Then some 50's and 60's guys Rosilino (I'm definately not worthy) ,Fuller,
Fontana, Watrous.
What about George Lewis?
For the Bass Folks, Phil Teale

For all his pyrotechnics Ray Anderson just doesn't cut it in this company.
In my not so humble opinion.

If you haven't heard Phil Wilson (teachs at New England Conservatory and
Berklee) and Urbie Green, you really haven't heard the trombone played to
its ultimate capacity. There was also a guy named Bruce Fowler that played
with Frank Zappa that was something else also. This is not meant to
disparage the ones mentioned below. They are all great also. I also just
remembered Jack Jenny that played that beautiful bone solo on Stardust with
Artie Shaw.
