There was:
'Bone Straight Ahead
Manhattan Wildlife Refuge
Tiger of San Pedro
I know he's got new stuff released on CD, but I wonder there's some vinyl
out there I need to start combing attics for.
BTW, is anyone aware whether he ever plays anywhere with big band? I saw him
about twenty years ago with a quintet in Toronto, but never with big band. I
give my chops to here him live with a whole bunch o' jazz musicians.

Geez... I can't believe I forgot about this one. I even have this album.
One of the cuts is an interesting multiphonics tour de force duet featuring
Watrous and Manglesdorf.

I guess the next question is, since any vinyl you order or buy on the 'net
is "iffy" at best, any suggestions on how I can get digital versions of
these (I'll settle for .mp3 if I have to but I'm leery of "spyware" on the
readers on the net). Perhaps there's a single label or two he was signed to
back then that I could contact?
Also, still waiting to hear if anyone out there is aware of any b.b.
concerts anymore?

Bill's big band, sometimes called Refuge West, still appears live. Most
recently I saw the big band live at the Jazz Bakery club in Los Angeles
last October. The band is awesome and the performance was simply a
knock-out! I have seen the big band listed at other times at the Bakery.
I would guess he plays there about 3 times a year. They don't play any
of the old charts from the Columbia albums. He has a new book of
excellent arrangements by guys like Gordon Goodwin and Tom Kubis.
With his quartet, he plays the Steamers jazz club in Fullerton, say 5
times a year. If you like jazz trombone, one of these evenings is like
drowning in a huge vat of chocolate, so to speak.
He made an excellent series of small group LPs, some with trumpeter
Danny Stiles, for Harry Lim's Famous Door label. Many of these have been
listed by other posters. Harry Lim has passed. I think it is George Buck
of the Jazzology record label that now has the rights to the Famous Door
material. The first LP in that series was recently re-issued in CD
format. It's under the Progressive record label, part of the Jazzology
family. I am hoping they will re-issue more of Bill's Famous Door LPs on
CD.

Jeff Thompson
