This is pretty interesting. I have to say I think it's funny and silly how very
black and white everyone's view about Maynard's behavior is. Not to mention
their views of the young women who get backstage and meet Maynard.

I think it's grossly exaggerated to say that Maynard is a date-raping,
man-whore megalomaniac. It is similarly inaccurate to say that Maynard's *sole*
interest in meeting these women is to get laid. Maynard likes the company of
women, and he's quite content to have an intelligent conversation with one
without trying to bed her. It is also inaccurate to say that any woman who
wants to get backstage, or does get backstage is some psychogroupiecocainecrazy
who is only after Maynard's cock.

Since I did in fact meet the man, I think I might be able to shed a little
light on the situation.

So yes, in fact I made it back stage and met Maynard, and my experience was
nothing like the negative ones that I've read so much of over the years. No, I
did not get a "slut" pass, nor did I "beg" for one. After the show, I asked
Maynard's security guy very nicely if getting backstage were a possibility for
me and a friend of mine. He said he'd see what happened. He led the first group
of women in, and then ultimately, came back for my friend and I and led us
backstage.

Maynard made small talk with the group (about 20 women or so, yes, all women),
asked funny questions, played a few pranks. I think the purpose of his
questions were to kind of feel out the intelligent life in the group, see what
people's agendas were and so on. After this phase, he signed a little something
for everyone, and then gave out other passes for people to go back to his hotel
room to get some food and drink and chill.

My friend and I got this second pass, and hung out with Maynard and a few other
women (maybe 8 total) in his room. We had some wine and ordered some food.

Now to what you really want to know:

Here's the deal, about Maynard: If you conduct yourself with class and
intelligence, he will respond in kind. If you act like a sycophantic whore, (or
try to take advantage somehow), he'll treat you like one. Maynard is a pretty
blunt person, and direct to a fault. If he doesn't want to talk to you, he
won't. Moreover, he *will* take advantage of your ignorance/immaturity if you
let him. He's not benevolent, and he's certainly no saint, though I don't think
villifying him is appopriate either.

To get to the point, Maynard was very respectful to me and my friend, and we
had some really great conversation about music, art, movies, wine, ankhs,
sexuality and so on. I didn't have huge expectations for Maynard, and so I
wasn't disappointed. In fact, this is something we discussed a little bit that
night: the importance of separating the art from the artist (in fact, this
point came up when we were talking about Trent Reznor (NIN fans will be
interested to know!). One groupie had mentioned that he was weird and quiet
when she met him post-show, and Maynard was talking about the fact that Trent
is very very shy, and that you can't make expectations based on his stage
persona).

After several hours of chat, wine and food, my friend and I and about three
other women called it a night. He signed a few more things for us, and we went
our way. Indeed, there were two or three women who stayed on after we left, and
you've read enough rumors to know what probably happened then.

I can't say that I personally condone Maynard's promiscuous behavior, but I
don't judge him for it either. His life is his to lead, and he doesn't pretend
that he's something that he's not. And I certainly wouldn't categorize his
behavior as particularly vile and evil either.

If you created some grandiose expectation of him, that's simply your problem.
At the end of the day, I can say that I am pleased to have met Maynard in
person. I don't think we'd ever be good friends or anything, and I wouldn't
even say that I particularly *liked* him. But I do respect him, and, since I
conducted myself with respect, I'm pretty sure he respects me as well.

So to summarize: on the one hand I agree with Tooldvn that it's silly to create
huge expectations for a person that you don't know. On the other hand, I do
think it's unfortunate that this woman had such a negative experience. I also
don't think that her experience is an indication that she was dressing and
acting like a ho and "got what she deserved". It's simply not that simple I'm
afraid. The social dynamics when it comes to Maynard's relationship with women
is much more complex than that.

Maynard's very human, very gifted, and very flawed. Keep that in mind if and
when you meet him, and you should have very few problems.

lol. Yah, I think so, but I'm not sure whether or not you actually meet anyone
in the band. Someone else posted about their non-ho pass backstage experience,
and it seemed that they just got some free food and beer or something. Can
anyone verify?

I don't see anything wrong with having sex with however many people you want
to, but I do have a problem with people fucking someone simply because they
are a "rock star". Thats not to say I would try to stop them, its their
choice after all. So no, I don't like groupies. On the other hand, Maynard
sleeping with a woman that was backstage does not strike me as anything
terrible. After all, a little mutual respect is nice isn't it? But
supposedly from all that I have heard, don't know whether to beleive, that
only women are allowed to meet the band, this strikes me as very offensive.
I'm not even talking about a 3 hour chit-chat, just a simple "hey man, good
show, keep it up". And I'm not even sure I would want to meet them, but the
girls only thing is sexist, if in fact it is true. I'm careful what to take
as fact.

This is interesting. Why? Personally I'm not into casual sex of any sort, or
having sex with people for superficial reasons. But how is bedding someone
because he's a "rock star" any different from someone bedding a girl simply
because she's "pretty" or "easy" or whatever reasons one might have? A bit of a
double standard, don't you think?

So why is the woman sleeping with Maynard terrible, or unacceptable as you see
it? Two to tango and all that...

>After all, a little mutual respect is nice isn't it? But
>supposedly from all that I have heard, don't know whether to beleive, that

Um.. quite frankly, I don't think *anyone* actually meets the whole band when
people get backstage. I mean the whole band certainly was not there when I met
Maynard, and at no point during the night did they show up. So I dunno what the
deal is there....

Maybe those with the non-ho pass meet the rest of the band.. and then the
groupies meet Maynard?? No clue here.. But from what I've read of other posts..
Maynard did not talk to the others with the non-ho pass, as it were.

>I'm not even talking about a 3 hour chit-chat, just a simple "hey man, good

Oh, it's definitely true, there's no reason why I or so many people would make
up shit like that. I agree it is sexist and ridiculous. But that's Maynard. Not
exactly Mr. Gracious you know...

>I'm careful what to take
>as fact.

That's a good policy, but I'm afraid this is in fact, fact.

I've met him, talked to him for a long time, he essentially ignored all the
women backstage at APC/NIN Denver.

Let's get out the old cantilever of truth here:

Vertical suspension...One ho'ny rock star. On one side...Very attractive
(and maybe some not so) babes, willing to do just about anything to please
ho'ny rock star. On the other side...Sweaty, stoned dudes with bad haircuts,
outdated tee shirts and shitty weed/coke/acid, wanting to discuss mic
placement, or double helixes.

SURVEY SAYS???

So what's with all the gay metaphor in their lyrical content? You mean to
tell me he'd rather clean carpet, than smoke pole? I'm stumped. He looks gay
to me. But then again, so did Rock Hudson.

The clothes are soaked in gas, the match is lit...Lemme have it!

Talk about Chinese whispers! If I recall correctly the story (Richmond post
I think) began with Maynard being seen entering a room full of women and
then exiting again 15 minutes later or something. Some people jumped to
conclusions about the wild sexual activity that must have gone on behind
that door (although personally I think its ludicrous to think anything would
happen with so many people, maybe if it was a couple). But then even after
this mystery has been revealed as being nothing but a film showing
(supposedly), now the band is being accused of being sexist and only letting
females back stage!

I say believe what you will but if you can't base your aspersions on the
truth at least base them on the stories being fed.
