Hello.
Can anyone tell me if there are works of Tom Waits recorded by other
artists?
I have "Step right up" - The songs of Tom Waits (Caroline 7243 8 4111427)
and The Briar and the Rose on "Loosen up" by Niamh Parson and the loose
connections.

Any others?

Webbie.

I haven't listened to this one myself (yet), but you might want to try
Christine Collister's The Dark Gift of Time (Koch). She sings tunes from
Waits, Nick Drake, Elvis Costello, Bruce Cockburn, etc.

Answer: Check out Rainbow Sleeves by Rickie Lee Jones..moving and
inspirational. I don't believe Waits ever recorded it himself but would love to
hear him do it some day.

I recall that 10,000 Maniacs did a version of I Hope That I Don't Fall in
Love With You (is that the title or did I make it longer than it actually
is?). Of course, Natalie Merchant made it sound like she was singing about a
male but, I think they did the song justice.

Canada's Holly Cole released a complete album of Tom Waits covers called
_Temptation_, which includes the aforementioned "The Briar and the Rose,"
"Tango Til They're Sore," "Good Old World," "Take Me Home," and a dozen
others. Not bad at all.

Holly Cole does, to me, the best covers in a CD msde up totally of
Waits music, "Temptation." And Marianne Faithfull has the song Waits
wrote for her, "Strange Weather" on many CD's.

Bruse Springsteen did a decent version of "Jersey Girl". Rod Stewart
did, I believe, "Tom Traubert's Blues". And I recall hearing a remake
of "Downtown Train" on the radio which sounded like Rod Stewart too.

A really bad metal band called "Bulletboys" did a pretty good cover of Hang
On St. Christopher on their album "Freakshow."

Only good tune on the record. It came out in '91, and is worth looking for
in the $1.99 bin at your local used CD store.

Some others: Bette Midler sings 'Shiver me timbers' on her 'Life at last'
lp/cd
Mathilde Santing, arguably Hollands best female singer, sings
'broken bycicles' and some others. A long list of covers can be found on the
Tom Waits webside. Also there is a cd with 12 or 15 covers by as many
artists. You might find it in the TW section of your local music shop. I
remember a very dramatic
version of 'Christmas card... on it.

Another postr mentions "Hang on St. Christopher" on the the
BulletBoys album "FreakShow". Interesting to note that Ted
Templeman produced both albums. I wonder if Ted is a big
fan of TW?

Shawn Colvin does a version of "Heart of Saturday Night" on the
appropriately titled CD, "Cover Girl"; just her voice and her
guitar, and it's faithful enough to the original.

Sadly, Manhattan Transfer did a pathetic cover of "Foreign
Affair".....

Anyone remember who covered "San Diego Serenade"???

Although the word "CASH" is displayed prominently on the album cover, anyone
looking for this set should search for "American Recordings" which is the
title of this Grammy-winning collection. And, yes, "Down There by the Train"
is one of the best songs on an epochal album. Mark

I think the response posts covered all the ones I know about. Sometimes
when I get to feeling about "what a shame" it is that Waits doesn't get
a lot of commercial recognition, I feel better thinking about the
royalties he picks up from some of these remakes. If it were not for
them, he might not have the financial wherewithal to put out the great
stuff he does.

To say nothing off the cool movie roles (Bram Stoker's Dracula, Down By
Law, etc.).

An afterthought: does anyone else remember Waits doing a cameo on
"Fernwood Tonight", playing at a wedding?

I used to think assassination was the only answer to Rod's continuing
ruination of great pop songs. Not just Tom's. Think what he's done to Van
Morrison. Tim Buckley (Jeff's dad). And on and frigging on. Fortunately,
Rod Stewart manages to trash every career break he gets. One expects to
see him on game shows. He's the George Jessel of pop music.

(If I didn't spell Jessel right, that probably demonstates my point exactly)

It might be well to point out at this juncture that he must have gotten
something out of the $5,000,000 infringement award that Fritos lost a few

this helps Tom spend a bit less time working and a lot more time with the
