Any others?
Webbie.
I haven't listened to this one myself (yet), but you might want to try
Christine Collister's The Dark Gift of Time (Koch). She sings tunes from
Waits, Nick Drake, Elvis Costello, Bruce Cockburn, etc.

Holly Cole does, to me, the best covers in a CD msde up totally of
Waits music, "Temptation." And Marianne Faithfull has the song Waits
wrote for her, "Strange Weather" on many CD's.

Bruse Springsteen did a decent version of "Jersey Girl". Rod Stewart
did, I believe, "Tom Traubert's Blues". And I recall hearing a remake
of "Downtown Train" on the radio which sounded like Rod Stewart too.

Only good tune on the record. It came out in '91, and is worth looking for
in the $1.99 bin at your local used CD store.

Some others: Bette Midler sings 'Shiver me timbers' on her 'Life at last'
lp/cd
Mathilde Santing, arguably Hollands best female singer, sings
'broken bycicles' and some others. A long list of covers can be found on the
Tom Waits webside. Also there is a cd with 12 or 15 covers by as many
artists. You might find it in the TW section of your local music shop. I
remember a very dramatic
version of 'Christmas card... on it.

Another postr mentions "Hang on St. Christopher" on the the
BulletBoys album "FreakShow". Interesting to note that Ted
Templeman produced both albums. I wonder if Ted is a big
fan of TW?

That's because it's a different song from the TW one with the
same title.

Now. What are "Staceys"? (Don't all shout at once!!)

Staceys are a type (or brand?) of boots.

Canadian artist Holly Cole devoted an entire album to TW
covers(Tempation). And of course the horrible Rod Stewart cover of
downtown train.Know of any others?
The Eagles do "Ol' 55". Recently Hootie and the Blowfish have been covering "I
hope that I don't fall in love with you"

I know it is hard to hear, but I'll say that Rod "the mod" Stewart did
"Downtown Train" Oh well...

Shawn Colvin does a version of "Heart of Saturday Night" on the
appropriately titled CD, "Cover Girl"; just her voice and her
guitar, and it's faithful enough to the original.
Sadly, Manhattan Transfer did a pathetic cover of "Foreign
Affair".....
Anyone remember who covered "San Diego Serenade"???

now that i think of it, i think meatloaf did a cover of "martha," too...holy
christ...hang on while i go vomit... :)
seems to me waits fans would dig much of cash's oeuvre, informed as it is by
blues, country, gospel and early rock and roll (as is much of tom's)...
And...two words for you.
MAGGIE MAY
So there must be something there.
At the very least, it may have turned more people on to Tom.

Although the word "CASH" is displayed prominently on the album cover, anyone
looking for this set should search for "American Recordings" which is the
title of this Grammy-winning collection. And, yes, "Down There by the Train"
is one of the best songs on an epochal album. Mark
To say nothing off the cool movie roles (Bram Stoker's Dracula, Down By
Law, etc.).
An afterthought: does anyone else remember Waits doing a cameo on
"Fernwood Tonight", playing at a wedding?

Here's a Waits track you won't know (I think) :
Freddie White doing 'Martha' - I heard old freddie do this before I even
heard of Tom and I heard of Tom a looong time ago :)
