Interpretation of "Romeo is bleeding"

Hi people!

In English class, we're doing a unit of analyzing songs, one of which
will be Romeo Is Bleeding. I volunteered to lead the discussion on
that one because I'm crazy about Tom and didn't want anyone else to
touch it (other people in my class hardly know who he is anywya).

But I'm relatively new to being a Waits fan, and as much as I love
this song, I haven't yet had a chance to sit down, read all the lyrics
carefully and think about what everything means. I guess I'm at that
"puppy love" stage where I've just discovered Tom and I'm completely
overwhelmed and insanely happy that he's in my life now.

So it would be wonderful if someone could share his thoughts on how to
interpret this song. Even simple things like who is Romeo (what he
stands for) and why is he Spanish? :) Should you take the words at
(more or less) face value or are there different layers of meaning?
ANY thoughts, opinions and interpretations would be greately
appreciated.

Just a quick note before I head off to work:

The song is a great example of a tragic anti-hero, admired by many in the
underground (Romeo's fellow gangmembers). While shot and dying, Romeo
remains the quintessential "tough guy." Instead of heading for a hospital,
he goes to the movie theater and watches a Cagney flick. (If you're not
familiar with James Cagney, I would highly recommend watching Public Enemy
or White Heat for some point of reference. Cagney's characters are often
exactly Romeo's type. One of the most fascinating aspects of Tom's music to
me has always been his references to movies; and much of the time they're
early classics.
Hope this helps at least a little!

when they hear Tom's voice. Of course most of them will hate it.
