At one time, Todd endorsed Fairlight in trade magazines, and there are
numerous photos of him with the instrument, but what did he actually use it
on? The rumor was that 'Acapella' was done on the Fairlight, but Todd said
that the delivery of his unit was delayed, so he ended up doing the
recording on an Emulator instead.
I can hear the Fairlight being heavily used all over the Bourgeois-Tagg
album, and some of Jill Souble's stuff. But did Todd ever use it himself on
anything other than scoring the Pee Wee Herman's Playhouse show?
Also, I also believe he used to own two EMI Putney's, and the beasty RMI
computer synthesizer, the one that used paper punchcards to store patch
settings. Todd stated once in Keyboard magazine ( and I believe Mix as
well), "I do almost everything on a Roland keyboard....".
I'm mainly a Roland guy, and Todd sounds are easy to create on the Jupiter
or early JV series stuff.
I have a Roland Jupiter 8 that every default patch is like something from
"Hermit". I've seen pictures of him playing a Jupiter before.

I just listened to all his personal demos for the 'Second Wind' sessions and
he created all of them entirely on what sounds like a DX7 or similar Yamaha
digital synth.

Lastly, I stole a peek at Todd's live guitar rig back in the 70's and he had
a bunch of Morley pedals scattered around. Not sure what models though.
Didn't he endorse Morley in the trades back in the 70's?

Todd was the US Artists Rep for Fairlight (maybe he got one free in return for
the PR work).
He used it a lot on POV, Love Bomb, and Skylarking.
I remember a trade ad picturing him from the POV era, but i haven't been able
to find it.

I used to have a poster of Willie endorsing Sabian Cymbals. Him and his
drumcycle. It's long gone.....

I have a photo I took at a NAMM (music trade show) in New Orleans of Todd in
a white lab coat demonstrating the Fairlight at their booth..

Todd of course used the EMS VCS3 in his early days. I think that's what M. Frog
used in his days with the group...looking at the back cover of the first Utopia
album, it looks like a bank of three VCS3's wired in series (without keyboards,
it looks like. VCS3's didn't come with keyboards, you had to buy keyboards for
them seperately) plus some sort of mixer. Moogy, despite his name, played a
Fender Rhodes and a Mini-Korg. Ralph Shuckett played a Hohner Clavinet and some
sort of organ. Roger Powell, in his early days with the group, added a
Mini-Moog to his ARP gear. I think he may have still been using the 2500
(modular) at the time. There definitely exist photos of him on the stage with a
Minimoog, and ARP Odyssey and, of course, the RMI Keyboard Computer with its
sparkle-top finish and row of gaudily-coloured organ tabs! It looks like a
Fender-Rhodes and a Lowrey home organ fell in love and had a child. ;-{)>

I saw him demoing the Fairlight at an AES show in New York. Had on the
same white lab coat. He played a cool instrumental piece he had created
on the Fairlight. I have a cassette of it somewhere (I smuggled in a
walkman type recorder.) Roger Powell was with him, too.

Actually Frog used the Synthi A's and AKS's. Same layout as a VCS3... but in a
briefcase! Eno is a big fan of these.

<< Moogy, despite his name, played a

I have footage of Moogy with a minimoog...he used the minikorg because it was
quicker to change sounds onstage. He also had the RMI KC I keyboard and a Sound
City electric piano.

<< Ralph Shuckett played a Hohner Clavinet and some
sort of organ. >>

The organ was a Yamaha of some sort. He also had an Arp string ensemble.

<< Roger Powell, in his early days with the group, added a
Mini-Moog to his ARP gear. I think he may have still been using the 2500
(modular) at the time. >>

When Roger first joined he was using a Custom built double Moog 55 modular
system. The pic of him onstage with an Odyssey is from the Bowie tour he did.
Roger's setup for a while was an RMI KC I (or II...later) Minimoog, Hohner
Clavinet, Arp Omni (or String ensemble). He also used several homemade synths
and a Prophet 5. On the Redux in '92 tour he used two Kurzweil K200's.

I just bought a mint RMI KC I! I can't wait to get it!

Those are Synthi AKS's. Same guts as a VCS3 in a briefcase.

When he first joined replacing frog, Roger had a custom double Moog System 55
modular. The pic you saw w/the Oddyssey is from the Bowie tour he did. He also

The high school I went to had one in the band room, and I used to skip
classes to sit in there and play for hours every day. I ended up playing
'strings' for my high school concert band even though I wasn't officially
'in band'. The band director threatened to turn me in for cutting classes
unless I helped fill out the sound at "Spring Fest" with the RMI.

Jeez Guido--- Where did you find a mint KC I?????
Don't tell me you found a gem like that on Ebay!

Hey Guido, man of infinite wisdom:
When Powell played his 'Probe', what module was he triggering?
My bet is on a 'Prophet 10', I make this guess based on two things- Roger's
typical patches sound like a Prophet, plus once at a RA tour concert, his
Probe shit the bed and the roadies drug out a Prophet 10 with about five
pancake fans screwed onto these huge heat sinks on the back.
But- I also saw Roger at another concert tweaking what looked like a rack of
Oberheim OBX modules, the hospital equipment looking white ones.

And:
How was he triggering? That was pre-midi, correct? So was it CV gate? I seem
to remember that the Probe cable was as thick as a garden hose.

Didn't the original Utopia live keyboard gear also contain some Emu modular
and Serge modular?
My memory is very fuzzy.

Thanks!

I believe the Probe was controlling an Oberheim SEM module bank.

I believe that's correct.

<< Didn't the original Utopia live keyboard gear also contain some Emu modular

Todd used some in his 'RA' guitar rig and for Willie's cycle synth drum kit.
