I was listening to Nazz Nazz the other day. No, I'm not talking about
getting the boys from Nazz back together. However, even though Todd is not
one to tread old ground, it would be interesting to hear him take some of
the Nazz tunes and rework them with his vocals. Stewkey is fine, I guess,
but on some of those songs you get some brief lead vocals by Todd and I
can't help but wonder what they would be like with more of that awesome
voice.

Isn't there a rare/bootleg version of Nazz Nazz that has Todd singing most of
the vocals?

Wow...Frank asks this!

I have always heard of such a tape, but have never heard it no known
of anyone who has. If Frank B hasn't either, then it's probably just
plain unavailable.

A sort of Todd Holy Grail, ya might say.

i believe the Rhino Best of Nazz album replaced Stewkey's voice with Todd's
vocals on a few cuts.

I had found an LP of the Nazz with different cuts of several songs, simply
titled The Nazz From Philadelphia. I believe it was issued as a fund raiser
for Stewkey (about 1997 or so), who I heard had been quite ill, and this was to
help out with his medical expenses.

Like a dope, I sold it on eBay, but not without making a cassette copy first.
I remember it had a demo version of "Hello, It's Me" as well as alternate
versions of Meridian Leeward, Forget All About It, You Are My Window, Under The
Ice, and a few radio spots they did at the time. This wasn't an
all-Todd-vocals project, though.

About five years ago my son, who was in a major Tom Petty phase before
beginning his MAJOR Todd phase <g>, joined a Tom Petty fanclub and began a
correspondence (by *snail mail*!) with a girl his age. When he told her that
his mom was a big fan of *this guy Todd Rundgren*, she responded by saying, "Oh
yeah, my uncle used to be in a band with him. His name is Carson Van Osten."
This is a true story! It's a weird, small world, my friends.

I recall him saying in an interview that he had "the acetates around
someplace" of the guide vocals he put down on the demos for the1st Nazz lp,
maybe he still has?

I was under the impression that Nazz.3 had many todd vocals and since he
split they overdubbed or replaced vocals.....same on Nazz 2?

RIGHT. So who's got the acetates?

Frank has them; however, he agreed not to distribute them when Stewkey
got sick. The thought was that there would be some type of official Nazz
release via Rhino or some other company. The Fungo Bat album is very
ambitious. If I had been a record company executive at the time, I too
would have culled it down to the single album Nazz Nazz. The blues jam
stuff really was not in vogue. Some of it sounds unfinished too.

Nazz III on vinyl is definitely remixed by Stewkey with replacement vocals
and
additional double tracking of the lead vocals by Stewkey (something that was
often
done on all three Nazz albums.)

Nazz III on CD is much cleaner and Todd sings lead on "Only One Winner"
which was sung by Stewkey on the SGC and Rhino vinyl releases. I have to
believe Todd may have been invovled with the CD reissue of Nazz III. Nazz &
Nazz Nazz (on CD) sound like they were made from some "production master"
that was found and used to quickly get the albums to market. Nazz III has
much less
tape noise and is clearly a different mix from the LP version.

If you have "13th & Pine", Stewkey includes his version of "Only One
Winner" and
also the instrumental only version with Todd's vocals removed.

I've heard him do a few Nazz tunes over the years. Didn't he just do
Open My Eyes on the Power Trio tour?
