Helloooo everyone!

just got back from seeing a losers lounge tribute show at fez... for thsoe what
dont know Losers Lounge is a semiannual event run by synth-god Joe Mcginty
(played keys in monopuff) where today's "underground" pop-folk cover the hits
of the 60s and 70s. ANYway, today was a greatest hits show being recorded for
CD and who should be on the bill but... you'll never guess... THEY MIGHT BE
GIANTS!! playing for a crowd about the size of the merc but much swankyer!

the song TMBG were doing was The Butchers Song off The Zombie's amazing album
"Odessy and Oracle"... its one of the most terrifying songs ever written and,
no two ways about it, john and john killed it. rather than using the stage
like a normal rock band they proceded to parade in through the hallway (which
was actually quite cool) and wander around the tables sans mics. linnell was
playing accordion very nicely but flansy was screaming at the top of his lungs
and carrying a large tape recorder with the lyrics taped on it(?) ANYway, i
dont reccomend that flans makes a habit of walking and screaming because they
turned the zombie's terrifying anti-war tune into a laughable mockery. it was
still pretty cool having flans screaming in my face but...i dunno.

i got it on tape but it'll also probably appear on a Best Of Losers Lounge CD
that has no release date whatsoever. very cool. robin also sang the Monkee's
"randy scouse git", another of my fave songs, and she also destroyed it but not
quite as badly

on a personal note, i went out at intermision to buy something and returned to
find myself standing right behind to noneother than a red-shirted John Linnell.
i wasnt going to say something but then i found myself standing right NEXT to
him and staring and he saw me... so i said "hi john" and he turned on his
blinding smile while his eyes were obviously looking for an escape "hey!!"
then i said "thats a really scary song you guys are going to do" and he looked
a little relieved and said "it sure is" and then i thought it'd be an awful
shame if he had a panic attack before the show so i excused myself... "bye", i
said. "bye" he said. i think that ups the number of words he's said to me to
something like 27... woohoo! when we left he was sitting at a table chatting
with WFMU dj (and fellow Tin Horn) Nick Hill but i couldnt get up the courage
to say anything else, ah well

on their next tour everyone yell for The Butchers Song,

I don't know if it is a common recording around you tape trader folks, but I've
got the entire Loser's Loungs Brian Wilson tribute on tape. Joe McGinty is the
far-better known brother of my roommate, Chuck McGinty. He sent us a copy of
the tape a couple years ago.

The real gem is John Flansburgh singing 'Caroline, No' at the end of the Pet
Sounds set (they performed PET SOUNDS in its entirety, each song with a
different guest vocalist).

Can't wait for the Zombies!!!

Each day just moves so fast....you turn around, it's past.

Ok, if you want to talk about strang incounters with one of the John's.
I was at this show in St. Louis, TMBG just kind of showed up in St.
Louis, and anounced a suprize show. You had to stand in line for
tickets and all that. I got there at about 2pm, (I had classes up until
that point, and nothing better to do). It was a hot August 18th, 1993
day, so my friend and I went accross the street to "Muddy Waters" to get
some water. Well, as we where standing at the bar, we looked out and
say Brian, and John L. sitting at a table ordering. My friend and I
started talking, saying this would be a great time to talk to them, but
we didn't want to bother them. I made a run for the bath room really
quick. So when I get in there, guess who is inside using the bathroom?
You guessed it Mr. John F. He was at the sink shaving, and from the
looks of it, not doing a very good job. I tried to piss, went to wash
my hands, said "Hi, I'm looking forward to the show tonight, did you
guys have a good trip in?" He just kept on shaving and said, "Yes, and
I hope you like the show." After telling my friend what I saw and said,
we took a shot, and went and talked to them. John F. had shown by that
time. We said we didn't want to bother them, just wanted to say Hello
and all. I got autographs from them all, and John L. did his like John
F. I also goth them to "Accept/Indorce" me using "Purple Toupee" for my
BBS, and the use of "The Blue Canary" as my name. Cool huh?

The cool thing now is, I've met John F. so many times that he knows me
by sight, and we can acctuallyhave a really conversation. One of the
last times I saw him, I helped him out by passing out postcards and
things for MonoPuff.

MonoPuff did a show here once, and I had a good opertunity to talk with
John F. and the rest of them about the show, and how we liked it, but
how we cound't hear the poetry reader.

Anyone else have some cool "I met the John's" stories?
From,
The Blue Canary
