I agree with Bill; the show was great. The venue was tiny--not much more
than a patio at a big hotel. A wing of rooms enclosed one side of the
patio and the bands used a couple of rooms for backstage purposes.
One of those hemispherical chain-link softball backstops was behind the
stage. It was overgrown with ivy, which the trumpeter kept poking at. I
was worried that it might rain, but the gods of weather held off until
this morning. The average age of the crowd seemed to be 17, but they
seemed to be familiar with whatever the band threw at them.
I thought the Johns were really up for the show. Maybe since the venue
was a bit intimate they weren't as bothered by the possibility of crushed
fans. They did ask the crowd to step back 5 feet and reminded the bodies
being passed around to only kick close and personal friends in the
head--not total strangers. They also seemed pretty amused at the long,
tubular balloons (the kind you twist into weiner dogs) somebody sneaked
in that kept being propelled onto the stage; one just missed the bassist
and sputtered out somewhere near the drum set. The security guard
segment worked on the first try (They indicated the recent difficulties
They have had) and "anything by the Eagles" was the request. "Take It
Easy" (which They admitted may have been written by Jackson Browne) was
the tune: "3 that wanna stone me, 2 that wanna kill me, 1 says ... he's
my dad...
They DID do Purple Toupee along with the usual stuff I've heard mentioned
for this tour. Interestingly, this was the first time I've heard the
"official" Sun Song (Why (Does) the Sun Shine?); I don't have the disc
and the only prior exposure I've had was the first time I saw Them back
in '88 or '89 when they did just a snippet of it at a tiny bar in Santa
Barbara (back when they wore the big hats that crush down on your head
and make you vote Republican).
Other newer stuff included:
Sleeping in the Flowers
(Extra?) Savoir-faire
Cautionary Tale (?)
Dirt Bike
Unrelated Thing (?)
...Snail Shell
All in all, a great time. Thanks for listening!
