Well, my friend, you missed a good show. This was the 4th time I've
seen Them, first time in Denver. While it wasn't the best show I've
seen the put on, it wasn't the worst either.

First the opening band. Sorry I forgot the guy's name. He was pretty
decent. They reminded me of Matthew Sweet. Their set was only about a
half hour long, but I dug it. TMBG always has a good opening band.

Then TMBG came on at about 10:15. Unfortunately there was no intro (I
was hoping They'd do the countdown, but I don't think they've done that
in a while). They opened with the Severe Tire Damage Theme. They
played until about 11:50, including 2 encores.

I was dissappointed that they didn't have their horn section. I am
still amazed at all the different instruments they incorporate into
their show. But lack of a horn section (mostly trumpet) hurt them on
such songs as Dr. Worm, Istanbul, and No One Knows My Plan.

I was surprised at a few of their choices of songs. I didn't really
expect Subliminal or Mammal. I was completely shocked when they played
Lie Still Little Bottle. And I thought it was way cool when Flans
decided that it had been too long since they played Pet Name, so they
played it (and really well, I might say). By the way, does anybody know
what song they decided NOT to play after Lie Still Little Bottle because
it sounded "too much like the last song"?

I have never seen Them as candid as they were at this show. Flans asked
if there was a barrier keeping everyone from being crushed by the 8 foot
people (the people up one level). They spontaneously changed the set
list several times to play what they wanted. And Flans made some jokes
when someone yelled out "You suck". I have never seem them interact
with the audience so well (although I've never seen them at a venue that
you could get so close to them).

They had a lot of fun surprised during the show. Linell broke into
Cumbaya (sp?) during Particle Man. They played Mr. Tamborine Man during
Spy. They also did their usual crowd-yelling thing during Spy. They
did the conga during No One Knows My Plan (ev-ery bo-dy Con-ga! I'm not
f*ck-ing kid-ding!). They did the people vs. apes thing during planet
of the apes (I finally realized that everyone is yelling "peo-ple
peo-ple" in the STD track). They did the big glockenspiel (sp?) bit
during Shoehorn With Teeth. They did Their puppet thing for Exquisite
Dead Guy in the second encore.

Other thoughts: I couldn't believe how many people knew all the words
to Mammal. The bari sax on Lie Still Little Bottle sounded good. The
Guitar is such a better live song than recorded. Flans had a Florida
Gators guitar strap on one of his guitars (sorry, but this really
bothered me). Flans let some lucky audience member play his guitar
during The Famous Polka. They had a cannon full of confetti go off
during James K Polk. The crowd seemed a little more mellow than the
other show I've seen (but again, I've never seen Them in Denver
before).

Here is a list (sorry not in order) of the songs I remember Them
playing: Working Undercover For The Man (new song!!!), Older, Planet
of the Apes, Dr. Worm (first encore), Severe Tire Damage Theme, They Got
Lost, S-E-X-X-Y, How Can I Sing Like a Girl (they closed with this one),
Exquisite Dead Guy (second encore), NYC, "James Knox Polk", Pet Name,
Subliminal, Spy, No One Knows My Plan, Why Does The Sun Shine, I
Palindrome I, Mammal (first encore), The Guitar, Birdhouse in Your Soul,
Istanbul, Particle Man, Twisting, Whistling in the Dark, The Famous
Polka, Lie Still Little Bottle, Shoehorn With Teeth, She's An Angel.

They Got Lost
Twisting
The World Famous Polka
She's An Angel

Working Undercover For The Man

Shoehorn With Teeth
Subliminal
Older
James K. Polk
S-E-X-X-Y
Spy / Mr. Tambourine Man
Lie Still Little Bottle
I Palindrome I
Pet Name

Whistling In The Dark
Why Does The Sun Shine?
Battle For The Planet Of The Apes
Birdhouse In Your Soul
The Guitar

No One Knows My Plan

Dr. Worm
Mammal
How Can I Sing Like A Girl?
Exquisite Dead Guy
Istanbul

I taped this show and the recording came out well, for anyone who's
interested. I'd be interested in trading for other TMBG shows especially
from this tour. And if anyone here in Denver taped the radio performance
they mentioned during the show let me know.

Did Flansburg walk around the stage "slamming, stomping, hitting" what
looked like a didgeridoo (sp?) to make a really nice "thud/crash"
sound durning Lie Still Little Bottle?

Don't know about this tour, but when I saw them after the John Henry
release, they brought out what they called "The Big Stick" which was a
tall stick with a mic right near the bottom. It made for an intriguing
bit of percussion. Not unlike the concept of the polka instrument known
as the "Lagerphone."

Hello,

I was at the Denver show and I'd love go get a copy of your tape.

I have lots of TMBG bootleg audio and video
to trade.

Check out my web page for details,
plus I've got all three 1997 irving plaza
shows and more that I've been too lazy
to post yet.

And I've got a friend who also wantsa
copy.

Russ
