It was a new thing. He played some State Songs on accordion and the
interviewer also played some tracks from the CD. The interviewer sang
with Linnell on "Arkansas"!

i will replpy to my own message- john WAS on David Garland's Spinning On Air
show last night... they played some of State Songs and they played a couple
state songs live (Montanna, Oregon and Arkansas) and john babbled quite a bit
about... things. one thing he pointed out was that when he says "people who
live down in a hole" he actually means all the buried dead people... sort of.
i always pictured it as more of a dr. strangelove underground base thing which
he also actually mentioned. and he said that the state songs were supposed to
encompas "the sum total of experience" or something to that effect which was
why some of them had to be bad. and that the guy in Montanna was delusional
and the only reason he chose "leg" was cuz the vowel sounds are right

david garland is also a musician who does very strange songs (ive seen him with
brian dewan a couple times) and he sang the part of the boat on arkansas as
well as the part of the french horn. and oh, john said they're gonna be doing
a bunch of covers live including Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young (others they
were working on were The Tennesee Waltz and Oklahoma... and if john ends up
singing showtunes then i will never need to go to another rock show again)
Stumpbox 3 anyone?

Cripes! I wish there was some kind of offical announcement posted on the tmbg
list about this broadcast coming up...I missed the whole thing :-( Does anybody
know where I can listen to this via an archive or something...maybe somebody
out there taped it, and will put it up on Real Audio? I can't seem to find an
audio version of it anywhere.

Looks as though it's a WNYC production, and not distributed by NPR.

I found this page:

http://www.wnyc.com/archive.html

with the following description:
Spinning On Air

John Linnell, the accordion-playing half of the rock band They Might Be
Giants, joins host David Garland to present his new solo recording "State
Songs." This Friday tune in for Spinning On Air with David Garland.

And there's a "Read" Link, which gets to this page, with pictures of
Linnell in studio, and a description.

http://www.wnyc.com/musicculture/spinning/garland111299.html

It doesn't look as though there'll be realaudio, but keep checking the
first URL, and there might be a "Listen" link around later. They might
not have gotten a chance to archive it, since most of the staff works
weekdays.

Check http://www.wnyc.com/archive.html on Monday or Tuesday to see if
RealAudio shows up. And you might be able to order tapes from wnyc.
