1. Who is Dr. Kildare? I've heard of him before, but I'm not sure what
he's known for.
2. Flansburgh says that he took the melody from a song on a ska tape.
Was that song also called "Dr. Kildare," or was it Flansburgh's idea to
make the song about Dr. Kildare?

"No one in the world ever gets what they want, and that is beautiful.
Everybody dies frustrated and sad, and that is beautiful."
It's a TV show from the '50s, I believe.

It was a ska cover of the TV theme song (which was successful, itself, on the
charts). I seem to remember hearing something about Flans getting someone from
NPR to give him the lyrics.

It`s a song by The Skatalites. I heard the original version a few
weeks ago. Mono Puff`s is basically a cover of that, only Flans added
lyrics where there is a horn part. Same melody though. Oh, and yes it is
called Dr. Kildare.

DR. KILDARE
(1961-1966)
Medical drama - NBC
Cast
Dr. James Kildare............Richard Chamberlain
Dr. Leonard Gillespie........Raymond Massey
Dr. Simon Agurski............Eddie Ryder
Dr. Thomas Gerson............Jud Taylor
Susan Deigh..................Joan Patrick
Nurse Lawton.................Lee Kurty
PRODUCER: Norman Felton
THEME SONG: "Three Stars Will Shine Tonight."
Based on extremely successful series of movies in the 1940s. Kildare
was a handsome young intern. Gillespie was his mentor. The "ER" of its
day, this show was rather graphic (for the time) in its depiction of
medical stuff.

That's what I thought, too. Does anyone know what it was about?

Yes... Dr. Kildare was an old TV show... it followed a doctor, who was
a young snot, and he went around being a doctor and was constantly
helped out by the friendly older doctor who had a gruff exterior but
actually a heart of gold... etc. etc. Or maybe this was Ben
Casey...8)

Yeah.
That reminds me: "Rat Patrol" is also the name of a TV show from the
sixties. Frank Gannon, in his essay "Rat Patrol: A Saga" (available in
_The Best American Essays 1997_, Houghton Mifflin Co.) relates the
trailer as follows:
A deep "announcer" voice:
THEY PLAYED BY THEIR OWN RULES.
(Shots of jeeps driving very fast through the desert, making hairpin
turns, throwing sand all over the camera.)
WHAT OTHER MEN CALLED
THE WASTELAND, THEY
CALLED HOME.
(Shots of some grimy-faced guys with bandannas around their necks.
They are driving their jeeps very fast and making very abrupt turns that
throw sand into the camera.)
THIS FALL.
THE RAT PATROL.
(Shot of a really big explosion with a giant wave of sand going all
over everything.)
Not that you cared....

As I recall, Chamberlain made a pretentious big deal out of quitting
TV to go do Shakespeare. Hence, "I love the theater, I'm Dr. Kildare".
