Hi, guys!

I saw TMBG in Poughkeepsie on the 24th -- and, as usual, they did a
really great show.

I'm not going to include song titles because I can never remember
*anyone's* song titles...so this is an overall review, ok?

They started off a little slowly, energy-wise. Linnell kept throwing
in references to "eating too much at the Lone Star Steakhouse" (about
10 minutes down the road) which makes me wonder if he wasn't feeling a
tad ill -- or at least overfed. They got more into it as the show
went on, though.

I was really surprised to hear how stripped-down they were -- the last
time I saw them was at Irving Plaza, on Valentine's Day, when they had
the whole horn section, etc. This time 'round it was the Johns, Dan
Hickey, and a bassist (whose name escapes me...sorry!). Linnell did
a lot less singing this time; probably because he's filling in the
horn sounds with a lot of keyboard work. (Actually, maybe he *wasn't*
feeling well....)

Especially fun parts:

Applauding for Dan Hickey's glockenspeil solos during "Shoehorn"
....ding! (He seemed quite gratified!)

Watching Flansburgh "conduct" everybody else (including the audience!)
in one of their "improv sections" -- where they're all just kind of
throwing things in. Of course, when he pointed to us, we all screamed
our little heads off....

The conga line! This requires some explanation...the Chance, in
Poughkeepsie, is in a really (fabulous!) old building that has a
general admission area right in front of the stage. It's actually
railed in, thus making it a natural area to mosh, slam, etc. The
Johns were keeping an eye on what was going on in the pit -- I don't
know whether they were watching for sheer amusement or out of concern.
They stopped the show at one point because it looked like someone got
hurt -- and it was actually someone looking for his sunglasses.
(Geeeezzzz......) It was the happiest pit I've ever seen, though....

So, after one particularly frenzied bout of moshing, the Johns asked
us to try a more traditional dance...the conga line! They were
intending everyone to wind up the stairs, into the balconies, and back
down, but it mostly went around the first floor, through the mosh pit
and around the bar. Hey, I was impressed regardless. It was a
beautiful thing to see....

They did the conga at the Ohio show on the 23rd... I was
there... It got me about 2/3 of the way up to the stage,
too! :) (I was 25 minutes late and got stuck in the back.
Luckily all I missed was most of the opening band.)

for each other. The trolls, however, find them
both rather tasty.
