Then that classification is meaningless. Weezer and TMBG
share nothing in common except some fans, and if that's enough to
classify them together, then Weezer can be called emo using the
same justification.

Rivers and Flans share similar glasses. and that's often what people
use to classify music as "nerd/geek rock".

Whoa! A Weezer/TMBG shared thread! This is keen!

With stuff like this, why need message boards?

Emo is a superficial term, or in my opinion, has been since the late
90's. And I really don't care for that stuff either. (Rites of Spring,
SDRE, etc).

But I also think genres are the lazy man's way of narrowing down what
one likes and doesn't. Yes, I suppose that the last paragraph would
render me a lazy man.

I think it is human nature to try to classify things. I think it helps us
understand things with which we are unfamiliar. Usually though, the terms
we use to classify things have different connotations to different people,
which only serves to negate the usefulness of classification.

You lie! Twas I who swooned first!

And you're right, it was implied -- but I thought I'd clarify things for
those few people who seemed a bit lost. Not for you, my dear, dear, dear,

Geez, Katie, congratulations. (Sooooooo not jealous.)

Oh, incidentally, while at work this morning (shelving books at Barnes
and Noble) I was putting away a copy of Seventeen (eww) that someone had
left open when I noticed that the headline was "Am I emo?" Upon further
inspection I learned that among the items of clothing "a true emo kid
swears by" are "striped shirts, geeky glasses, dark denim jeans, and
ratty old Converse or Vans." So apparently John Linnell is emo. Who knew.

That's gross. The type of person you are shouldn't be defined by what you
wear. That type of personality definition would make me a 30 year old game
show host.

I wasn't saying I did it first. I said that's why I was doing it in the
first place, meaning that if anyone was doing it for another reason, I was
ignoring them.
