Well, it finally happened. When we first decided on getting TMBG, I didn't
realize how much work it would be. At 8:30 am yesterday, i sleepily began
to help set up for it. The entire day was spent pushing big things around
(peices of stage, speakers....), building the stage, getting their dressing
room cleaned up, oh, doing eveything. It wa amazing though, to watch the
place go from gym to concert. The band arrived around 5 or 530, soundcheck
began around 6. The soundcheck sounded pretty good (at least really good
for gym acoustics...) After soundcheck, doors were opening. I was given
the assignment of being one of those people between the stage and barrier -
having never made it to that side of the barrier (except once, getting
thrown out of a show), it was kind of exciting...until i realized how close
to the speaker i'd be (right in front of it)....

The band came on at 815, starting with their usual frank sinatra opening
stuff. After a breif intro, they opened with DON'T LET'S START. The croewd
was pretty mellow, which surprised me, but made me VERY happy -- being on
that side of the barrier, i didnt want to deal with it. I won't go into
super details of the show, as im sure most of you have seen em at least
once, if not 8 times. Set list was as follows:
FORE/DON'T LETS START
THE GUITAR
THE SUN
SNAIL (a new one)
ALLOWED (another new one)
LUCKY (another new one) note - i was very impressed - a kid probably no
TURN AROUND more than 8 knew all the words to these!)
FLOWERS (i dont remember this, but its on the list...)
THE STATUE GOT ME HIGH
WHISTLING IN THE DARK (lost a LOT since the days when john L would come ou
w/a bass drum strapped onto his chest)
(next on the list it says WHY-SAD I am clueless)
NARROW YOUR EYES
SHE'S ACTUAL SIZE
PARTICLE MAN
I PALINDROME I
FAMOUS POLKA 8^) the crowd was much too mellow for this one!
MAMMAL
SAVOIR FAIRE (another new one with crazy drum solos)
ISTANBUL
ANA NG
TWISTING
FRANKENSTEIN (a cover)
DIG MY GRAVE

encore:
some new song
BIRDHOUSE
SPY

it was a great performance. the drummer (brian?) played glokenshpiel on one
of the new one, and they had a ukalali (misspelled) onone.

after the show, i really wanted to talk to the johns - i had an old letter
john f had written me with a cartoon drawing of them, that i wanted to show
them and get john l to sign. but, they were in their typical "too cool for
fans" mode. it pissed me off, i was already backstage (part of my security
duties) and couldnt talk to em. I was talking to the drummer for a while -
he was really nice - and he brought my letter back to the johns. he was
real nice, same goes for the bassist. when they were all leaving the 2
johns wouldnt even slow down enough for us to thank em for a great show or
anything. pity, we were the people payign them. oh well. glad i got to
meet john f during the days before they had too many fans to bother with.
they really did have an attitude going though.

it was a fun night, but i must say that my muscles are mighty sore from
moving around all that equipment.

oh good news - this was their last show before going into the studio, so a
new album is on its way...

That's a new song called "Why Must I Be Sad?" sung by Linnell. It was good.
