Secondly: CBGBs was tonight and I'd say it may have been the best show
I've seen by the band (Note to those who know me: I've discounted the
WPI show ... I was ... well ... you know ... I'm not sure if they were
really as good as I thought because well ... nevermind).
I had a grand old time (and met Keith even, but not Ali, sadly). Despite
my sworn allegiance to stay in the back, my friends FORCED me up front
(well, okay ... I wanted them to be up front because it's such a good
spot ... ok ... I'm lying. Sue me). The crowd was polite and we
were very close to the Giants (yes, closer than Providence, all you
Waaaaah-two-sies!). There was no Trumpet-Man in sight for his fans,
but I talked to Brian "I am the drummer" Doherty briefly after the show
and he was super cool. Anyway ...
TMBG played a lot of new stuff ... mostly heard previously on Dial-A-Song.
But the song they opened with, Snail, better be on there next album is
all I can say. It was one of the greatest songs I'd ever heard. Sadly,
they skipped Ondine. They didn't play it. They also played a decent
balance of "old" songs --- Ana Ng, Twisting, Lucky, Don't Let's Start,
Mammal,Whistling in the Dark ... I don't have the set list, so I
forget.
That's my quick thoughts. I REALLY enjoyed this show and I'm psyched
to have gone.
And Keli, you DO have the same color Chucks as Linnell so I guess I'm
gonna have to get that color now. Blee!
-murph (ilene)
Oh ... p.s. ... I've decided that the line in the Statue Got me High
(They played that too ... and I palindrome as well), that goes:
"And though I once prefered a human being's company, it pales before
the monolith that towers over me" is about Joel/Mike on the Satellitre
of Love with the bots. Ok ... it doesn't QUITE work, but I thought it
was funn.
Their 45-minute set went from around 8:45-9 to about 10:15. I was
around center stage (in front of the bass player) about 10 people
back. A little after 8:30, while different people were pushing
through, Flans and some other guy pushed his way past me & I told my
friend "that's one John". About 5 minutes later the rest of the band
with Linell in the middle pushed their way past me. "There's the
other." I thought that was cool.
Here's what They played. Yes, I actually attempted to scribble down
the playlist every couple of songs while dancing to the song in a
place where each person is allocated about 1 sq. ft. of floor space.
The dancing turns more into just jumping then, too. Here's what I was
able to decipher afterwards:
1) Snail
New song. Not sure of the title, but I think I've heard this
song before on Dial-A-Song.
2) The Guitar
I was majorly disappointed to not see Laura Cantrell there <sigh..>
but hey...
3) Why Does The Sun Shine
"...the nuclear reactions of hydrogen, oxygen, Noxol, ...hair,
and wood."
4) Why Must I Be Sad
New. I've definitely heard this one on DAS.
5) James Ensor(sp?)
New. Song about a painter. Couldn't make out many of the words.
6) Lucky Ball & Chain
7) Turn Around
8) I Should Be Allowed
New. Not sure of the title. I liked it.
9) Instrumental/Introduce the Band
10) We Should Be Sleeping In The Flowers (?)
New. I liked it a lot. Fun sound. Not sure of title.
11) The Statue Got Me High
12) Whistling In The Dark
13) Extra Savoire Faire
New. "This is a song about another guy..." or was it "This is
a song about the other guy..." Oh well. At least I'm sure of
the title. (:
14) She's Actual Size
Flans did a cool intro to this.
15) Particle Man
16) Don't Let's Start
17) Famous Polka
I think it was during this song that Flans was letting the
crowd play his guitar. After it ended he said "And it's still
in tune. Funny how that happens...when you don't care."
18) Mammal
When Linell realized he was in the middle of singing a wrong
line he got the coolest grin on his face and continued nicely.
19) Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
20) Ana Ng
I really liked the extended intro. They played the start of
the song for about a full minute before Linell started
singing.
21) Twistin'
22) Instrumental
23) Frankenstein - Edgar Winter's
My third time seeing them play this. Of course, they didn't
do this back when They used to play to tapes. The first time
I saw them with the band, last year in Poughkeepsie, I wasn't
sure if I prefered their playing to tapes or with a band. I
definitely like the band much better now.
24) Dig My Grave
Encore:
25) No One Understands
New. Again, not sure of title. Cool.
26) Birdhouse In Your Soul
27) Spy
They did a really cool Linnell-tries-to-see-who-he-can-make-screw-
up-the-ending extended ending on this one.
I wish they'd played some more of their earlier stuff, but I'm not at
all unhappy with what They played. Here's the breakdown by album:
(Don't blame me if I make a mistake -- I don't have the albums with me
at work.)
1 pink - Dont' Let's Start
1 lincoln - Ana Ng
6 flood - Lucky Ball & Chain, Whistling In The Dark, Particle Man,
Istanbul (Not Constantinople), Twistin', & Birdhouse In
Your Soul
1 misc-t - Famous Polka
6 apollo 18 - The Guitar, Turn Around, The Statue Got Me High, She's
Actual Size, Mammal, & Dig My Grave
2 wdtss - Why Does The Sun Shine & Spy
7 new
3 other
After the show I got to meet Ilene, if only briefly, but I didn't see
Willian Suter at all. It's been over 12 hours now and my ears are
still ringing. They were awesome & they get better every time I've
seen them!
-keith
p.s. Ilene - you're right: it doesn't _quite_ work, but I like the
statue-mst3k reference... (:
>tmbg, Wed, Dec 8, 8:30pm @ cbgb's:
I got an earful during their sound check in rochester, not to mention
the concert :). I can help a bit on songs.
> 1) Snail
> New song. Not sure of the title, but I think I've heard this
> song before on Dial-A-Song.
Actually, Snail-shell. "Thank you for putting me back in my *snail shell*"
Neat tune. Sounded right when they played it in Rochester. Wonder how
it'll finally turn out.
> 3) Why Does The Sun Shine
> "...the nuclear reactions of hydrogen, oxygen, Noxol, ...hair,
> and wood."
This one was *great*.
> 5) James Ensor(sp?)
> New. Song about a painter. Couldn't make out many of the words.
I must have heard this ten times, and I still can't remember the damn name.
John (whomever), belgium's famous painter... (some stuff) and he lived with
his mother. Somehow, I think I should remember more.
I wish I'd had more sleep the night before, 'cause then I'd remember that
much more :(.
