I agree with the fact that TMBG is awesom live... but they only played for
about 85 mins here... a little depressing! THERE WAS NO STUMP THE BAND!!
(this actually pissed me off) My brother saw them in Cincinnati last week
and he said that they played for about 2 1/2 hrs there in 2 sets... what
gives? are they just snubbing us or what?

and they didn't play my favorite (Lie Still)

but, oh well, i guess you can
not really expect a full show for the $5.00 admission...

still a TMBG fan

Is this tour they are on with a full band like the last tour? I'm
seeing them this friday and I was just wondering if it would be the
full group or just John and John.

Hopefully we'll get the 2 1/2 hour version :)

In an interview on the Vandy radio station before the show, John Flansburgh
mentioned that last year's show was a "nice little gig at that number place"
meaning 328 Performance Hall. He also said that the band was a little on
edge and grumpy after the long ride up from Athens. Maybe that had something
to do with it. I thought we had great crowd response, and little to no
moshing (which should have pleased them I guess).

They Might Be Tired?

Why, do they not like moshing?

Not in the least. At every show I've been to they've been quite beligerent
towards moshers (for some strange reason they don't want to have the people
in front get crushed). When they played in Charlotte on Monday they managed
to stop the moshers in only three songs. They stopped after the third and
Linnell said, "You know, it's really stupid to mosh to our music." Then
he and Flansburgh went on to remind everyone what decade it was and how they
should really try to live in it. The entire crowd (except for the group in
the middle) cheered. For the rest of the show that group was far too
embarrassed to mosh.

Actually he said "You know, it's really no fun to mosh to our songs." I
was in the front row, getting crushed (I'm the one who Flansburg said "Yeah
man, we love you too, are you our cousin from brooklyn or something?")

It was a great show.. For the stump the band, he asked me, and I told him
to do the BARNEY theme song. He didn't know it, so he did "Wouldn't it be
nice" by The Beach Boys. Linnell seemed really happy that night.

There was one really obnoxious guy with short blonde hair, drunk as
hell, who insisted on moshing the WHOLE time. I kicked him. Hard.
Felt good.. Everybody in the front row was getting smushed.

But I still had a great time.

---they came with a drummer, a bassist,a saxophonist, and a trumpet
dude.... i suppose that would count as a band....it was a wonderfull
show....after they said the show was over, they ended up playing
another five or six songs....including "birdhouse in your soul"
absolutely glorious, we danced, and laughed, and im still a little
deaf.

P.S. could someone let me know when the mailing list is back up? i'd
like to join it.

Peace.

Hey...I could almost see you. i was all the way on the left side (next to
the old bouncer from 13-13 who looks like he's on steroids) also being
crushed. I didn't do anything of note...except yell 'woo!' a lot.

Thanx for kicking him. I don't mind people moshing where you expect it, but it
really is no fun to mosh to their songs.

...it's the same at all of their shows, but people don't stop... at the
one I went to, the moshing fools got the following comments: "If someone
comes up to you and says, 'Hey, man, lift me up so I can get passed around
and hurt someone', just say-- 'No, I won't. Peace, my brother!'" and,
to a guy up on the crowd waving wildly to the rest of the concertgoers,
"Aah, all the girls hate you". They're cool! <g>

When I saw them last year here in Philly, I stood right in the front,
cause I didn't think anyone would be silly enough to mosh, but I ended up
getting smooshed and lost my shoes :( to the buffons in the pit.

PS ANyone know if the plan to come back to Philly any time soon?

I just saw them in Charlottesville, and it was a great show. There was too
much moshing, though, but thankfully no Passing the Dude. Twice they asked
the people to take steps back, and that helped a lot -- by the end there
was lots of room. (Comparatively, that is.) I was disappointed they didn't
play more early stuff... off of the first two albums, all they did was
"Don't Let's Start" and "Ana Ng." Not even a Purple Toupee. But they did a
great Spy, where Linnell played marionette and controlled Flansburgh and
the rhythm section during the free improv part. They did TWO encores, and
did the Famous Polka, which made me very happy. They performed at least
three new songs, probably more. There was this one annoying drunken guy
who kept dancing around and putting his fingers up his nose and thought it
was funny, and there was some kid near me who was moshing too hard. I kept
pushing him away from me but he just kept coming back. I guess he liked me.

Where will they be in Ohio, I wonder. The last concert I saw was in
Columbus 3 years ago and it was great. Any leads?

Hate to tell you this, Joe, but they played Columbus Sept. 7? and
Cincinnati Sept. 17, where I saw them. Err, I did post ads for an extra
ticket I had in a few of the local Athens BBSs, but in the end we took
this dorky guy who DJs at the same radio station as me; in fact that guy
still owes me and a friend about $6!!!

I've just got to ask, is it me or does TMBG sound a bit like the
Residents? I've got a few Residents CDs and noticed striking
similiarities in the sleeve notes of the Residents _Commercial Album_ and
TMBG's _Apollo 18_. For one, Apollo 18, as you most likely know, has a
bunch of songs at the end of incredible brevity (collectively called
Fingertips) - The whole _Commercial Album_ is based on really short songs
about a minute or so in length. The Residents claim that if one were to
play a song off the album three times over one would end up with a
pop-song, fully developed with verse and chorus. Also both CDs claim to
be excellent in shuffle play (which they are). Third, but not last, both
CDs contain a track titled "Fingertips". Fourth, yeah this is the last
point, the Residents were sited as one of the groups on the record deal
from the TMBG info club thingy (the name escapes me).

Makes me wonder....

I've always thought that Mr. Klaw on Misc. T sounds EXACTLY like the
Residents, mostly in the beginning part. Anyone agree?

totally concurr. as ive said before on this net, there are a lot of tmbg songs
that sound like residents songs. Youll miss me, spider, boat of car, chess
piece face, hall of heads (the beginning at any rate), and yes, mr. klaw. there
are probably others too, but these are the most obvious examples.

Hmm. Maybe I haven't heard enough Residents... all I really have listened
to multiple times is Duck Stab and Meet the Residents. I think Mr. Klaw is
by far the most blatant. For some reason I can't even remember how Hall of
Heads goes. This is really annoying me. Boat of Car? Hmm. I don't know
about that one. Still, I guess they all have more in common than say,
Michael Jackson.

I must be listening to different Resident's albums than y'all, I suppose.
Maybe it sounds different on vinyl than CD, I don't know. I have
Commercial Album, Duck Stab/Bust & Glenn, Meet the Residents, Not
Available, George & James, and a couple others. I also have all TMBG
except their new stuff. I think both groups are fantastic, but I really
fail to hear much resemblence, even for Mr. Klaw and Spider. Of course,
Fred Frith, Adrian Belew, and Snakefinger's guitar styles don't sound much
alike to me, either.

I guess chess piece face is a bit "Residential", but even then, I feel as
though it's TMBG's way of expressing something, rather than trying to sound
like something. Perhaps in this song they're expressing some of the same
stuff that the Residents often are.

Somewhat off the topic, people (a couple months ago, anyway) were
recommending bands to TMBG fans. Besides the Residents, I'd also recommend
Robyn Hitchcock, The Soft Boys (his old band), Pere Ubu (currently touring
with them), and 3Mustafas3. I recommend Brian Eno's first 3 albums to
everyone, so those, too. Um, and that Eno/Cale collaboration, I think it's
called "Wrong Way Up." It's not TMBG, but it's good.

Well, that's about it for my morning ramble,

-R (sbcm)
