hello news groupies,

what is the deal with the losers lounge and "Simply Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad
About The Loser's Lounge" CD? i was just listening to some of my mp3s,
many of them from the old twistid.com site. i stumbled upon this
recording called "butcher's tale" by tmbg. i was wondering if anyone
had info about the losers lounge or the song. the quality doesn't
sound so great, but the aesthetics of the song rock. i would love a
higher quality version, even if that means buying the whole cd. anyone
out there have it? is it worth it? what exactly is the losers lounge?

From what I understand, it's a cover band that have a different
semi-famous singers perform with them. I suppose the first search
result for "loser's lounge" on Google (http://www.loserslounge.com)
might be a good place to start, if you're curious.

The Losers Lounge is a celebrity tribute project headed up by vocalist Nick
Danger and pianist Joe McGinty, originally held at NYC's Pink Pony, and
later at Fez (a cabaret bar beneath Time Cafe on Lafayette).

The recording of TMBG performing "A Butchers Tale" comes from a compilation
called "Simply Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad about The Loser's Lounge", which also
featured Robyn Goldwasser covering a Monkees song.

I'm a million miles from NYC - all this info came from the back of the CD,
which I hold in my hand.

My close friend and former roommate is the brother of Joe McGinty, and he's
been doing these loser's lounges for years now. In addition to doing the
Zombie's "Butcher's Tale" for a LL, John Flansburgh previously sang a
version of "Caroline, No" for a Brian Wilson tribute a couple years ago. I
have a copy of it on cassette, in which they performed Pet Sounds in its
entirety. It sounds pretty much like the version on the recent TMBG EP. All
in all, they've done some great stuff.

For the benefit of those of you who are also XTC fans (of which I know
there are some), LL did a series of XTC shows a year or two back. A
"best of" CD of these shows is available from the LL web site. Those of
you who are pro-Robin Goldwasser will appreciate her cover of Scissor
Man (I'm kinda sorta on-topic, after all :) ).

P.S.: In the realm of additional XTC type stuff, my aol web site (see
sig below) has been updated. Open a Can of Human Beans has been removed
and replaced with I Wonder Why the Wonderfalls. The usual downloading
headaches and mediocre sound quality applies, but if you missed it, it
beats waiting around for it to find its way to Fuzzy Warbles (which
you'll still buy anyway, right?).

This show was absolutely incredible, by the way.
