Older / Robot Parade / Interview #1 / New York City / Cyclops Rock /
Stalk of Wheat / Birdhouse in Your Soul / Interview #2 / Mink Car /
Fingertips / Violin
Bear in mind that the interview segments were over a half hour long
each and both the Johns and Susan Orlean had the audience in stitches.
For the last three songs, Linnell played the in-house piano, which
made for a very interesting rendition of Fingertips.
They did the standard "wave" for Violin which failed miserably on the
trial run but was much more successful during the actual song.
They also announced during one of the interview segments that the name
of the new album is "The Spine." Interesting choice, I thought.
Only three weeks until they're back in town!

Hmmm.... doesn't sound very TMBG-ish.

Sounds rather Monty Python, a la "How to recognize different parts of the
body."

But "Flood" and "Lincoln" do?
-Jay
Sounds TMBG-ish enough to me. I like that title a lot. I hope it's for
real. You never know when they could change their minds or something
could happen. (Remember when the next record WAS GOING TO BE
"Superfueled Freaksicle?")
Chris
That was going to be the compiliation record of all their
Elektra b-sides. The next record was going to be
"Insect Hospital." No wait, it was "Unreliable Narrator"
-Jay "Matt's Life Savings" G.
Yeah, not mention "John Henry" or "Apollo 18" or "Mink Car" or "Factory
Showroom" or "The Phantom Menace".... My point is that they all sound weird
the first time you hear them. Think back to when you first started listening
to TMBG and how weird it all was... but now it's normal.

and the night comes again to the circle-studded sky
I remember thinking that Miscellaneous T was a terrible title for an album.
Now its just blah. Sooner or later we glean some distant meaning from the
title, either through a song lyric or by way of an explanation. Actually, is
there a story behind the title 'Flood'? Was it some kind of enviromental
statement?
"Lincoln" - the name of the town where the John's first met.
"Apollo 18" - the would-be name of the next manned flight to the moon,
chosen because there were a number of songs about or related to outer space
on the album.
"Miscellaneous T" - the category under which the band found themselves filed
in a record store.
"John Henry" - the american fable of man versus machine, representing the
band's shift from drum machines to a live band.
"Mink Car" - name of the song inspired by Flansburgh's wife who joked that
the album better make some money because she wanted a mink car. Linnell said
that they chose it as an album title because the album itself was "a luxury
item".
"Severe Tire Damage" - a reference to the amount of mileage covered by the
band on tour, chosen because of the live content on the album.
Can anyone explain any others?
Dar
theyve said Lincoln could apply to a lot of different aspects of their lives,
thats the reason they picked it, because it could mean anything... Same thing
they said for Flood. They dont like specific things.
Jordan
They've said it was called that because its contents were a "flood" of
songs. They've also said they called it that just because it was a natural
disaster, though.
> "Lincoln" - the name of the town where the John's first met.
And the middle name of their manager, among other things.
> "Miscellaneous T" - the category under which the band found themselves

> in a record store.
Does anyone else find "Miscellaneous [Letter]" sections annoying? I'd much
rather a store alphabetize everything, no matter how obscure.

Except I think the album title came before the song.
> Can anyone explain any others?
I've heard that Factory Showroom was called that because it was showing off
some of their more recent songs. I really don't know about Long Tall
Weekend, but weren't they originally planning on releasing it over Memorial
Day Weekend?

nah. it reminds me of ween, though. they had one called the mollusk.
i dunno. i like it.
but keep in mind, mink car was supposed to be unreliable narrator for a long time.
Well, "the next record" was. I kind of think of it as unreliable
narrator was an album that never came out, since they re-recorded all
the tracks except Working Undercover, and even significantly re-worked
some of them (so loud, lies).

I was at the New Yorker show Saturday night, and when Flans said the
title of the new album, my first thought was, "I wonder if he's saying
that just to see how much interest it garners on the web." Normally I
wouldn't think that he'd be that self-conscious about what he
says/does, but he made a point of explaining having a particular
coffee cup on stage adding, "...but this is the kinda thing that will
end up on the blog tomorrow."
The show was great, but too short I think. Of course I was there to
see los Johns, but I also wanted to hear them interview Susan Orlean.
A couple things of note: Ms. Orlean asked them what they would say
about having another artist, particularly one that they didn't
respect, cover a song like "Birdhouse". Linnell said he wouldn't care
and Flans was shocked. "We'll talk about it in the car." -Flans.
Also, Linnell played the last three songs on the in house piano that
faced the stage. When it came time to play "Violin", Flans asked him
to come back on stage, presumably to play the accordion, but Linnell
stayed at the piano, virtually unseen for all but the first two rows.
Maybe being able to see the audience up close was unpleasant for JL.
All in all an excellent event. I hope they have the opportunity to do
more like this in the future.

lover's quarrel!
*does handflip*
Also because it's a B-sides record, and they are "miscellaneous" tracks. hah.
"They Might Be Giants" - the name of the band on the album.
"No!" - my first reaction to half the songs on the album.
"Dr. Spock's Backup Band" - live show where TMBG played with Dr.
Spock, who later gave them the idea to record a children's record.
"Live!! New York City" - self-explanatory.

That's odd...Ween and The Mollusk were the first thing I thought of
when I heard the title.
Ween should do an album called Us Wong.
--Lex
Egh. I hope that wasn't a reference to ... recent events.
