I'm not afraid to bend my back
I'm not afraid of dirt
But how I fear the things I do
For lack of honest work
My family is lost to me
They could not bear the hurt
To see the state their boy is in
For lack of honest work
I hold no blame for anyone
'Twas I who did arrange
To pay my union dues so I'd
Not have to learn or change
And when I was replaced, 'twas I
Who started down the hill
And drank away my savings 'til
I couldn't stop myself
The prophets of a brave new world
Captains of industry
Have visions grand and great designs
But none have room for me
They see a world where everyone
Is rich and smart and young
But if I live to see such things
Too late for me they come
I know I'm not the only one
To fall beneath the wheel
Such company can not assuage
The loneliness I feel
So many are resigned to be
Society's debris
But I will be remembered for
The life life took from me
For I'm not afraid to bend my back
I'm not afraid of dirt
But how I fear the things I do
For lack of honest work

One of my all time favorite Todd songs - and my pick for the best song on A
Cappella.
Such a universal theme for working class Americans, Honest Work is timeless,
in a way. Heartbreaking in it's honesty about the need to keep growing and
learning in order to keep up with our changing world - Todd really nailed
it.
The writing, arranging and performance are, typically, brilliant. But if
you listen closely to the harmonies, there are some rough edges. It's like
Todd was in a hurry to get this one done....or maybe that part is
intentional. It does give the song a certain urgency.

I have a feeling the theme of this one will never be out of date.
While listening to Honest Work, I've sometimes felt that it's perfect movie
soundtrack material. Does anyone know if it's ever been used for this?

You need to rent a movie entitled "Cold Feet" that is filled with Todd
songs.

A musician friend of mine had heard a mutual friend of ours perform it
a cappella or with two part harmony. I played him the original TR
version and as soon as that third part came in, he said, "
Whoa...that's amazing".
