WHO'S THE GREATEST LYRIC WRITER?

Who is the greatest poet in the history of pop, rock and soul music? We
are looking for nominations from the general public. A panel consisting
of music critics, literature experts and the public will judge each song
individually. Should you know of a song which inspires or stimulates
you, makes you happy or sad, through the lyric writing, then we want you
to let us know. You may nominate by e-mail to "poe...@freemail.com.au"
. You MUST send the name of the song and writer of the song as well as
the LYRICS and if possible the copyright information. The name of the
lyric writer will be hidden from the judges to reduce any possible bias.
The winner(s) will not be decided on a voting process so there is no
advantage in you or your friends nominating the same song more than
once. However YOU CAN nominate MORE THAN ONE song from the same writer
or songs from more than one artist. You MUST INCLUDE LYRICS as we are
receiving thousands of nominations and can not search for lyrics.
Sweeping statements that a certain writer is the best poet in rock will
NOT BE ACCEPTED. ONLY lyrics nominated by the general public will be
included in the judging process, so don't rely on others to nominate
your choice(s) no matter how well known a song is.
Nominations close 4th December 1999. A web-site will be created to keep
you informed of the judging process. We will keep you informed of the
web-sites creation through here or via your e-mail address. Will it be
Lou Reed, Lennon, Cole Porter or some unknown or under-rated artist. Let
us know which song it will be and don't forget to tell all your friends.

Yeah, but Ian's lyrics sung by someone else probably wouldn't work very
well. I think his secret is all in the delivery.

I'd say Eddie Vedder or Bob Dylan. Both are true songwriters. Those
lyrics sound good even if you havent heard the song, thats how you know
its good lyrics. Bands like the Verve are the kind of band who don't
have bad lyrics but you need to hear the songs that go with them, they
have really nice lines everynow and then, but for me its either Ed Ved
or Dylan.

Dammmn...When I first purchased Little Earthquakes and heard those
lines from Silent All These Years, they messed with my mind for days,
leaving an impression that I just couldn't shake. Her lyrics are very
forthright.
There's a certain type of honesty blended in with a certain sense of
contemptuous
conviction. The part in S.A.T.Y. about the scream getting lost in the paper
cup and thinking
that "there's a Heaven where some screams have gone" is really outstanding
as
well; like no one hears her except for God and she's waiting for him to
send her a sign.

There is no song that she's ever written that moves me more than "Me and a
Gun"...
the part where she says "I haven't seen Barbados so I must get out of this"
and the
the line "Do you know Carolina where the biscuits are soft and sweet, these
things go
through your head" are absolutely amazing. The way that she calls upon her
imagery of
the past and her hopes to survive into her future in that song is very
cathartic.

Morisdette's lyrics are quite good -- I like the angry edge of
them. But the question was : «Who's the greatest ?», so my answer
will be : «The question does not make sense. Who's the best
writer ? Singer ? Football player ? Or artist ? In the world ?
Dead or alive ?»...

Sometimes I think it's Robert. He's no sage, but his lyrics just make me
curious and sometimes seem to tell a story. I like the obscurity of some of
his earlier lyrics, but I really like some of the ones off Head on the
Door, Staring at the Sea, and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. These ones in
particular:

"This is stranger than I ever thought
Six different ways inside my heart."

"And even if we drink I don't think we
would kiss in the way that we did
when the woman was only a girl."

"I am paralyzed by the blood of Christ."

"There are a thousand things" he said
"I'll never say those things to you again"
and turning on his heel he left a trace of
bubbles bleeding in his stead
And in her head a picture of a boy who
left her lonely in the rain
(and all around the night sang out like cockatoos.)

And of course my two personal favorites...

"So when the hurting starts
And when the nightmares begin
Remember you can fill up the sky
You don't have to give in.
Never give in."

"Which ever I choose it amounts to the same, absolutely nothing."

I especially like how Rob and Simon changed the part in
All I Want from "Hold you like a doll" to "Hold you like a dog".
I've read about this in several places, apparently it was
Simon's idea, and for some strange reason I think it's absolutely hilarious

considering the rest of the song.

Foolish Games still makes me cry a little bit every single time I hear it.
It conjures up these old, dark images in my mind that I just can't get rid
of until the song is over. Damn that Jewel Kilcher! Damn her! She's just
too potent, that girl. A very good lyricist, indeed.

Evidenced by them covering several of his tunes on record and at
shows.

Their band does a mean version of HOUSE QUAKE...and T-BOZ tears up If
I Was Your Girlfriend.
