I just got Wild Mood Swings a few days ago, and have had a few chances to
listen to the whole thing, and it's growing on me quite a bit, but I'd
have a tough time thinking of many Cure albums this is better than. It's
still better than just about anything out these days, so I'm not too
worried. What I think is really bringing me down about it though is the
drumming. This Jason Cooper guy seems to be a very competent drummer,
can keep a beat all right but beyond that, he's just very bland. I
realize not everyone can be Boris, but that's the standard that's been
set for the past decade and it's hard to suddenly settle for this. To be
specific, it seems on many songs when I would expect a really wacky
splash cymbal to pop up all over the place, or at least some nifty tom
fill, we only get the steady beat pounding away. What makes it even more
annoying is that there are several songs on the album with some pretty
cool drumming going on, but they are almost invariably those that JC
doesn't drum on. I'm thinking specifically of Club America and...okay, I
can't think of the others right now, because I don't have it with me but
trust me I was looking at the credits and noticed this for almost all the
songs he didn't play on. So they had good drummers while recording, but
decided to go with this guy. As far as I can see, he's got a pretty good
deal going, because he's got writing credit for all the songs, including
those recorded (with better drummers) before he even showed up.
What really cinched it for me was watching Saturday Night Live and seeing
him play In Between Days. There's not much going on musically in that
song anyway, but Boris' drums used to really fill it out. With JC, it
just sounded thin.
Okay, I've blabbed on enough. Flame away.

[bit about how Jason Cooper sucks ungraciously snipped by my news program]
i'd have to agree that Jason Cooper is no Boris, and that In between Days on
SNL was a bit flat, but as far as Cure drummers, he definitely holds his own.
I think that possibly only Boris (and *maybe* Andy) was better.
Maybe we should give him a bit more time to get used to playing with the band.
of course, the beats are not particularly innovative, but they're solid, and
don't override the other instruments. WMS is possibly the "busiest" album,
musically, since Kiss Me x3, and i think the sedated beats are not too bad...
at least they don't step on the toes of the other instruments...
just my 2cents,
tim
(tho i think he sucks hard too... kills the album for me)
Check the liner notes--he didn't drum on all of the album. He joined
mid-session. So don't blame the suckiness solely on Jason if you don't
like the album.
