There's only one song (maybe two actually) that anyone thinks the Cure
ripped off from New Order. As for the bands in general, there's hardly
any similarity between the two. Well, apart from the fact that both are
stunningly original, have highly emotionally charged songs and generally
stand out from the crowd compared to most of the tedious manufactured
crap that's passed off as music nowadays.

This is all about In-between Days and that New Order song (I think it
was called Love Vigilantes). The Cure song is truly a rip-off, and if I am not
mistaken, Robert Smith admitted this in his Melody Maker interview around the
time The Head on teh Door came out. From what I remember, the interviewer says
something like 'Everybody seems to think that 'In-between Days' sounds like
New Order', and Smith says 'That was the idea'. I am not sure about the
actualk wording, but I think that was the gist of it.
Otherwise though, the style of New Order is very different from the Cure's.
I would say they are more techno, and if anything, they are much closer to
Depeche Mode than either the Cure or (NO's parent band) Joy Division.

I'll tell you one thing though: Barney Sumner is (was?) in New Order and he is
working with Johnny Marr (in Electronic). Wouldn't it be really cool if Johnny
wrote a song for Robert to sing? Then maybe Robert and Morrissey could do a duet!!!!

"my name still conjurs up deadly deeds and a bad taste in the mouth"
you can compare..you can compare the bass lines on specific songs..and
say "this band wrote it five years before the other" and "the cure
borrowed it " (to put it kindly)...
why not?
why cant you do that?
of course they are different but that does not mean that the cure did
not rip off peter hooks pretty much patented sound..
cheers,
smm
and i'm glad they ripped it off...i'd hate to have been deprived of
just like heaven and in between days just because the cure's bassist
is not as grand as peter hook...
who is anyway? peter hook is a prodigy at bass..
Listen to "In Between Days" by the Cure (~ July 1985), then listen to
"Weirdo" by New Order (~ September 1986). There are similarities
in the guitars and the rythm.
Anyway, I like both bands A LOT, I think they are both quite original.
I don't really think that either has "ripped off" the other in any way.

I totally agree.
To me New Order is a simple pop band with a bad singer. The Cure is a
pop band with a very good singer, a lot of feelings, wonderful lyrics
and they have much more variation in their music.
I believe the comparison is common in America, because you Americans
haven't heard that many English groups. To some people The Cure would
sound just like Ministry. Ask your grandma!

i dont exactly agree with that statement (at least the first
part)... first of all... new order is an excellent band with a very
talented bernard sumner to lead... now the cure is also an
excellent band with an incredibly talented singer as well... both
have great songs... i agree the cure is a little more
distinctive... it's very simple to tell when it is a new order
song...

thats true.... considering British bands are far more entertaining
and talented than most (not all) American ones... think about it...
some people even associate the sounds of new order and joy division
just because of the members... if you listen to the two they sound
nothing alike... new order is a lot better!!!!!!

It's an opinion and you don't have to agree with me.

Hmm, am I the only one who wants more than that from a lead singer?

Yeah, some people really do that...:)
I'm not sure that I think New Order is better though.
Tip of the day: Take a trip to England and explore the wonderful world
of music!

Oh, please grow up. First you're asking for an opinion, and then
you're writing mails like this.
First you don't have any opinion about Cure 'modeling' themselves
after Joy Division "which is New Order", and now you do.
But OK, I don't really wanna continue this discussion with you,
because you will probably just throw even more shit on me and act as a
12-year-old boy or something. I will say a few things though.
Joy Division is NOT New Order. New Order is Joy Division WITHOUT Ian
Curtis. I wondered why they changed their name, when other bands don't
when a member leaves the group? BTW, what is The Cure without Robert
Smith?
I did not say anything about New Orders lyrics. I think they are
better than most pop band's, but as good as Robert's? No way!
Changing and revolutionizing? I would say commercializing...
The Cure did NOT model themselves after New Order, because they
started to play with each other 2-3 years before New Order even
existed. And they would be here even if New Order wasn't here. I don't
think they got much inspiration from Joy Division either, I'd rather
believe that Siouxsie and the Banshees was the main influence.
Everyone can sing with tons of vocoders, voice processors and effect
processors. But OK, his voice suits their music. But I don't call him
a 'real' singer.
Yeah, sure, we were talking about Warsaw in the beginning. A name that
only existed a couple of months. From the start you said? Hmm, my
friend must be lying then, he's got a tape with songs by Stiff
Kittens, which he claims was the start.
As a musician I would call New Orders music simple, and yes, I would
call parts of The Cures work simple too. But does simple music has to
be bad music? I definitely do not think so...
"... And I'm afraid of the Cure and the New Order, because they really
should know better..."
I wonder what he meant with that? Not the commercial stuff I think,
because Pulp is as commercial as any other "big" band nowadays.
