I'd like to find out what cymbals Stewart Copeland used with the Police.
Does anyone know about this or where I could find more information?
Thanks,
Dimitris.

As far as I remember, Stew only used Paiste cymbals and TAMA drums.
Check out performing videos and photos and you will see.

I think he used Paiste cymbals, from the "RUDE" series.
René.
Stew used a combination of Paiste Rude and 2002-series cymbals. 14"
Sound Edge hi-hats, and I forget the rest. Used to know all of them
by heart, same with Neil Peart's.....actually, I remember Nei's now.

<G> I went through that, as well.

I've read everything on Stewart and never read that he used
Swingstars. His first kits were Ludwig, from what I remember.

Right. Though he used a 14"x24" bass drum and 18" floor tom most of
the time of his career. I've got a bunch of Copeland interviews via
Police/solo interviews, Modern Drummer, and Paiste interviews and ads
packed away somewhere. If you want I'll look for them but I can
pretty much guess just by looking at his pix what he had.

He's used Zildjians and Paiste's, though moreso the latter. The
Paistes were usually 2002 and some Rude's. If you listen to the
studio cuts, such as Ghost in The Machine, you can hear the Rudes
quite distinctly from the 2002's. You're probably right about the 13"
heavy hats, but most of the time he used 14" 2002 Sound Edge hi-hats.
These are the ones with the rippled edge of the bottom cymbal.

Just looking @ them and also read about it. :-)

cant
Those were/are Paiste cymbals, 2002's. Paiste used an outline design
back then. The letters were not solid like Zildjians, just an
outline.

I've always loved his drum sound. It always sounded good on each
song.
From what I have seen on video, in books and have read, I too agree he used
at least Paiste 2002 and Rude cymbals.
Depending on what part of his career you look at, his kit is slightly
different.
I know he usedTama Swingstars (natural wood colour) early on with 10, 12 and
13" toms, a 16" floor, and a 22" bass drum. His snare was a a 14x5" Tama
(whose distinct sound is best described as the bough of a tree snapping
"CrAcK!"). The skins were generally wound up pretty tight. He seemed to
keep those sizes throughout. Added to that were his amazing rack of 8 Tama
octobans, a few cowbells, an odd tom or possibly a rotoban and various
wooden percussion instruments. Later he used Tama Imperial Star kits
(black, like mine! hehe).
I have less exact knowledge as far as the cymbals go but based on a Modern
Drummer article when he was in Animal Logic several years ago, they said he
had all 2002 cymbals, a 16" crash, 16" power crash, 18" crash, 18" power
crash, a chinatype, a 24" dry ride and a pair of 13" heavy hats (without
checking) + 2 or 3 splashes (6", 8" ??). Maybe a few cymbals were Rudes.
You say he used 14" Sound Edge hats. Thsi is new to me. Where did you
establish that?
From the "Police Around the World" video (a GREAT video btw), the cymbals he
uses there dont seem to have any markings on them so I cant be sure what he
has there. His cymbals always sounded great; never too overbearing and cut
in and cut out in just the right manner that allowed him to hit many things
at once without loosing definition.
I would say his Animal Logic kit would be very similar in setup to the last
kit he used during the Synchroncity concerts. I would also say that the
drums on Synchronicity and and Animal Logic s/t sound very similar (that
last fill on Murder by Numbers is a good benchmark for his drum sound).
If you have any other details on Copelands kit as far as type and size of
cymbals etc, I would like to hear what you know. I would really like to
know what types of hi-hats and ride cymbals he used as I think his choice
really gave him the ability to play those distinct sounding, tricky rhythms.

I have a Paiste profiles book that includes one page of Stewart with an
exact description of his set and some text/photos.(1981/82)
