That's good placement for Jon, I think. As with all "All Star" votes,
you can make a pretty good list of left-offs. From my perspective:
Elvis
Buddy Holly
Ray Davies
Steve Winwood
John, Paul and George
Eric Clapton
Don Henly
Tom Petty
Greg Allman
John Fogerty
Tommy Bolin
Justin Hayward
and on and on...
I also would have had Morrison in the top 5.
MD
So how many different web sites did you surf before you came up with a list
that matches your own taste?
Better than most but I question Gilmour, Meat Loaf, and Johnson.
And where the hell are Elvis, Lennon, & McCartney? Stevie Wonder? Aretha?
(Note that the title of the article says rock n' roll, not rock). No Roy
Orbison? Pathetic.
No Geoff Tate, but Ozzy belongs?!!
Quick, let me print this. I feel a bowel movement coming on.
I think they skipped the 50s. Stop whining DickL
Rock n Roll
> Ray Davies
Pretty ordinary voice.
> Steve Winwood
> John, Paul and George
Why not include Starr while you are at it? I would have included Paul
probably... towards the bottom of the list. None of them have a great
range.
> Eric Clapton
Must be joking right. FYI, Jack Bruce sang most of Cream's songs.
> Don Henly
Helll no
> Tom Petty
No
> Greg Allman
Balls
> John Fogerty
He wrote great songs but had quite an annoying voice.
> Tommy Bolin
> Justin Hayward
>
> and on and on...
>

Morrison is lowly placed, I agree.
>

I never though the theatrical vocals of Geoff Tate were that good.
Ozzy is not a great singer but his voice is perfect for the doom-
oriented Sabbath sound. I can't imagine anyone else singing on Black
Sabbath, Paranoid and Master of Reality.
The biggest problem I have with the list is the inclusion of Steven
Tyler, Janis Joplin, Sammy Hagar, David Lee Roth and Neil Young.
Pretty awful voices those were. Thank god, they didn't include Ian
Anderson of Jethro Tull.
I like parts of this list.
But two guys who have horrible voices do not belong here. Bruce
Springsteen and Neil Young. Puh-leeze.
Bruce often sounds like he's got rags in this mouth. And I like to call
Neil 'the winer'. They can write a bit, but can't sing for shit.
Take those two off. Add on Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes. Gregg has a
great voice that is instantly recognizable, and Warren has an amazing voice.
P-Dub: How bout that guy from Boston Brad Delp (RIP.) How bout the guy
from Kansas (Steve Walsh) ??
Robert Plant at 1 makes this list extremely stupid.
I forgot Bruce Springsteen. His voice is probably the worst of the
lot. He whines more than Michael Bolton.
Everyone, just please start killfiling now...

Mike Smith
Raja are you still sucking cock on your knees you homo?
please do not feed the homos
No John Lennon? No Paul McCartney? Unbelievable.
George Martin said John was one of the greatest rock voices . . . .
He's an expert and he was right.
Paul has a terrific range from quite low (Lady Madonna) to high (Oh!
Darling.)
Wasn't George Martin a homo attracted to Lennon, was it someone else?
His voice cracks when it goes high. Oh Darling isnt particularly high.
I would love to hear you sing it the way McCartney does and say
it's not high.
Don't you ever get tired of writing pointless lists, Raja? Didn't you
promise to shut up and go away about two years ago now?
> Why not include Starr while you are at it? I would have included Paul

And Jagger has it???? Neil Young more range than Paul McCartney??
Your ears are something to investigate or maybe do some medical
research

Sometimes he goes from high to low range on the same song: Don't Let
It Bring You Down, The Girl Is Mine, Why Don't We Do It In The Road
Definitive till the next one appears, which may happen next week
> Morrison is lowly placed, I agree.
Because Morrison has a wide vocal range!!!!! Sure!!!!!!!!!!!
Did I say the list was perfect. I hate Neil Young's voice... even more
than Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen. He would appear me in the top 10
annoying list. Jagger does not have a great range. And I will take
McCartney or Lennon over them.
You are a douchebag. I never said any of the above.
He has a decent range.
I would have included Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Mike Smith (DC5),
Van Morrison, Greg Lake, Allan Clarke, John Fogerty, Eric Burdon,
Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Elvis Presley
You are getting confused with Brian Epstein, the Beatles' manager.
He's getting confused with himself.
I would love to see anyone here sing Helter Skelter at Paul's age like
he did at the Grammys roughly 3 years ago. Sure his voice was not
the same from 40 years ago but still it was a great song and the
audience really enjoyed it!

Another shooting star. How many wannabe rockers *don't* want to sound
like him?
>11. David Bowie
Ick.
>12. Jon Bon Jovi (Bon Jovi)
I think he's here just because he's pretty.
>13. Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)
A clashy act with staying power.
>14. Jon Anderson (Yes)
Um, distinctive ick.
>15. Bruce Springsteen
Skinny arms.
>16. Joe Cocker
Vocalist was about all he could do, poor chap.
>17. Ozzy Osbourne
Um, distinctive, sure.
>18. Bono (U2)
Sonorus and soothing whilst at the same time piercing and cutting.
>19. Peter Gabriel
An amazing morph over his lifetime too.
>20. James Hetfield (Metallica)
If you say so. At least I've heard of his band.
>21. Janis Joplin
Shooting star . . . but the only girl on the list? Surely Annie
Lennox and Nancy Wilson qualify here.
>22. Chris Cornell (Audioslave / Soundgarden)
Um, pretty good, yeah. But where is he now?
>23. Roger Chapman (Family)
Who?
>24. Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy)
Great performances but where is he now?
>25. Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple)
Why is Glenn Hughes listed in the first place, then cited for the band
he did *backing* vocals for? No mention of his Trapeze years where I
thought his vocal work was much better and where did he go after the
Purple gig? Nobody knows because nobody cares. An average vocalist
for a wannabe band and second vox for a has-been band doesn't qualify
as "greatest" anything except maybe mistake.
>26. Steve Perry (Journey)
Ick.
>27. Jim Morrison (The Doors)
Let's not let grief get in the way of important decision making.
>28. Alex Harvey (The Sensational Alex Harvey Band)
disqualified - never heard of him or his band
>29. Rob Halford (Judas Priest)
Haunting sounds from this guy's head.
>30. Ronnie James Dio (Dio)
Competent studio singer.
>31. Sammy Hagar (Van Halen)
Classic screamer.
>32. Meat Loaf
A musical Sam Kinnison.
>33. Alice Cooper
Can't really argue him being here.
>34. Geddy Lee (Rush)
>35. Brian Johnson (AC/DC)
Both schtuck in their schtick but they do do it well.
>36. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
He does his job well but not great. Not enough range, variation or
power.
>37. Fish (Marillion)
I've heard enough Marillion to know that's not so.
>38. Dave Lee Roth (Van Halen)
>39. Biff Byford (Saxon)
disqualified - never heard of him or his band
>40. Neil Young
Neil Young?? A "great rock vocalist"? Fingernails on a chalkboard
took 41st right?

The Beatles were partucularly noted for singing. But you're right.
Paul had quite a range and a varying vox as well. He could croon out
a ballad then turn right around and scream a rocker.
Swill
Paul's voice cracked when he tried to sing high. He was still 100
times better than Young and about twice better than Jagger.
DEAD.

Orbison was known more for writing than singing. His voice was on the
edge of annoying to me.
>I think they skipped the 50s.
Then this isn't a rock n roll greatest vocalist list. It has only one
woman, skipped the fifties (and apparently the nineties and oughts as
well), put some very dubious names in (Glenn Hughes for one) while
skipping some obvious ones (Scott Stapp).

You should be used to it by now.

All vocal greats except Young and Anderson. You might realize that
had you been born a few years earlier.
Scott Stapp's voice is universally hated. You are in minority here.

I can't stand Allman's voice but Delp is another choice inarguably
better than a third of that list.

He hasn't sent your knee pads back yet?

That comment makes you look extremely stupid. Plant as the archetype
of the rock vocalist.

Should we start with you?
I agree. I am not fond of the redneck accent of the Allman Bros.
Yeah he changed the face of rock music with his over the top (in a
good way) and powerful singing.

Ooh, girlfren', you so harsh!

Plus he could mangled the lyrics all he liked and nobody would know
because nobody can understand what he's singing anyway.
Bedwarmer
Just speaking the facts, lady. I myself do not think Creed/Scott Scap
stink that much. I would take them over Nickelback any fucking day.
When the GODs played live, no one really cared about the lyrics, the
mistakes or the dressing sense... it was all about the aura,
mysticism, the atmosphere... Zeppelin toured all year and played 3
hour concerts... they were the biggest band on the planet... and they
put a bunch of good shows when they were at peak. I have many of their
bootlegs and their peak was from 1968 to 1972 when Plant's voice was
GODly and he didn't sound like David Coverdale.
That's like preferring a bowl of raw liver over a bowl of shit.
