Hey!
Does anyone happen to know the reason/meaning behind that rather strange
phrase, "Stronger than dirt?" at the end of Touch Me?
-Gabor
That line is from a television commercial that was playing on TV in the
late 1960's. It was a slogan for the houshold cleanser, Ajax. The reason
he said it I don't know, just an adlib I would gusess.

It was an anti-commercialism statement, yes. At least that's what I
heard. I've been wrong before.
>Did this have anything to do with Jim being upset at the Light My Fire song
>being used by Buick or whatever?
"Light My Fire" was never used in a Buick commercial--no matter what
Oliver Stone says. According to 'No One Here Gets Out Alive', the
other 3 Doors voted in favor of letting Buick use the song, but as
soon as Jim found out about it, he protested loudly to Jac
Holzman--the head of Elektra--and the song ended up not being sold to
anyone.
Was "stronger than dirt" added to the end of "Touch Me" as a result?
I doubt it. I don't see how one could have been a reaction against
the other. Then again, maybe the Doors were thinking: "You want to
use our music to sell stuff? OK, let's sell stuff directly in the
song then!" I guess someone will have to ask Mr. Manzarek about this
on the next chat.

At www.thedoors.com, I've seen archives of 2 different chats that
Manzarek and Krieger have participated in. That's probably the best
place to check to see if they're going to do another chat anytime
soon.

Gabor-
"Stronger than dirt" was an Ajax slogan at the time. I guess Jim
took a fancy to it.

here's any interesting article about Ajax and the Doors. This article can
be found in the book, the doors: an Illustrated History by danny
sugerman. On page 43 their is a review by the magazine crawdaddy, called
the doors, written by sandy pearlman. It came around the time Strange
days was released, it says this "And along these lines don't you forget
"My Eyes Have Seen You" starts off like the Ajax add, "Stronger then
dirt" I do not know what this exactly means, but something is related to
this.
