This has been eating at me forever... Would someone who never read the
lyrics to Riders on the Storm and haven't thought about them much please
listen to it now and fill in this blank for me:

"If you give this man a ride, sweet _______ will die."

Thanks.

i haven愒 heard the song for some time, but either family or memory is
sample over the other. i扉e realized it by very concentrated listening. i惴
not sure, but that愀 my opinion...

Interesting controversy.
The Doors official web site has it listed as "sweet memory"
Recent Doors interview had it as "sweet family"
and there are some other ones such as "sweet Emily"

About as confusing as the Florida election.

Yes, those are the three possible ones that I'm familiar with. I'm in the
Emily camp.

It's family. It's definately not Emily.

Just to refresh our memories, here's the verse in question:

There's a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin' like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play

If you give this man a ride

Sweet ______ will die
Killer on the road, yeah

I interpret it as being about a murderer who is hitchhiking along the side
of a road and that the person reffered to in the second tense ("you") is
someone driving down the road on the way to a holiday destination with their
children. If they were to give the killer a ride, either their whole family
would be killed, or at least just the daughter, Emily. I figure that Emily
is an almost cliche name for a little girl, as in Pink Floyd's "See Emily
Play".

It does make sense for the word to be family, but it'd be more grammatically
appropriate if it was "your sweet family will die", whereas "sweet Emily
will die" is okay as it stands. I've done all kinds of auditory analyses on
that one line, and I've been able to hear it as family, but when I'm not
trying to hear it either way, I can't help but to hear Emily. But I don't
know if it is, because I have a huge Emily bias (see my list of songs at
http://www.marxidad.com/MusicIListenTo). Even if the "official" word is that
it's family, I fear that the definitive answer went with Jim to his grave.

Also, on http://www.amiright.com/misheard/song/ridersonthestorm.shtml, they
say it's Family, but misheard as Emily.
