The Doors were in fact invited to Woodstock. They didn't want to do it
because they figured it was just another "Monterey pop festival."

I've noticed more and more that Doors' songs are appearing in movies.
I just saw Waterboy with Adam Andler and in one scene you
could hear peace frog playing in the background (dont ask me what it had to do
with the movie cause it didnt having nothing to do with anything in the movie
really). I know that also in Body Double, they have the song " The Spy" and in
Forest Gump they have a few Doors songs too.
I'm sure there are many more.....

It just goes to show how popular The Doors really are. Somehow though I have
always felt that they were considered to be shunned by alot of people. I saw
not long ago a cd of greatest hits from the 60's and LMF ( thats Light My Fire
for you non Doors' heads :) ) wasn't on it. Also when I was younger ( I am 24

by the way ) and started getting into 60's music I wondered how come The Doors
didn't play in Woodstock because I consider it the biggest concert in history.
Today I listened to the Miami concert and realized why. After Jim Morrison had
done all that shit that he did in Miami..... I can't say I agree with the
promoter or whoever organized the groups for Woodstock but I can understand why
they didn't want The Doors to play there. Well anyways thats what I think. It
would of been very interesting though if they had played at Woodstock. I wonder
what songs they would of played. LMF for sure.

The Doors were in fact never invited to Woodstock.

There's a rendition of The Crystal Ship in the bar scene in the
X-Files movie, though that's probably been mentioned. And don't forget
Apocalypse Now, which used The End to great effect.

The band X (a band produced by Ray) actually did 2 different renditions of
The Crystal Ship for the X-Files movie. A slow version that sounds more like
the original which can be heard in that bar scene. And a faster punk version
that is on the soundtrack.

Ray made it sound like he was disappointed when The Doors weren't
invited to the Monterey Pop Fest. So, I think they (or at least Ray)
would have liked to have been there.

The Monterey Pop Festival was the real deal. It was the festival with the
great music, not Woodstock. Most of the musicians at Woodstock played awful
sets. One of the best wasn't even on the album or in the movie and that was
CCR.

Actually, you're an asshole. But then again, we established that long ago.
The Doors were never invited to Woodstock, regardless of whatever revisionist
history they're touting at any given moment.

I heard Ray say the same thing in a Rockline(?) interview. He said something
to the effect of 'Not wanting to be involved with a hippie-love in, so the
band voted to decline the invitation.' In hindsight, he spoke of regret for
missing it.

I can't remember the exact date when it aired, but I re-call him also saying
something about JM being 'An alien who decided to check off of this planet.'
in the same interview.

Supposedly, I read somewhere that Morrison was afraid of being assassinated at
that time, and that was why the Doors didn't play Woodstock. (Densmore was
there by himself, though)...

Yeah I heard that Stone was going to make another film about The Doors.
He was going to call it "JDM". It involves all the plans and theories
behind the assassination attempt on Jim Morrison.

Also, the song People are Strange is used at the begining and end of
the vampire move "Lost boys," although this version is not performed
by the Doors.

Plus, I forgot to metion, a large mural-like poster of Jim is
displayed in the Vampire's cave in "Lost Boys."

"Lost Boys" also really played up/emphasized Jason Patric's physical
resemblance to Jim (this was before Jason went bald, needless to say!).
In the cave scene when Jason's character gets initiated into the vampire
cult by drinking blood, the screen goes all woozy and Jason's face
blends with the Jim Morrison poster on the back wall. It's not exactly
subtle! Maybe he was campaigning for a role in "The Doors". I think
Jason looked even more like Jim-circa-1970 in "Rush" where he has long
hair and a full beard.
By the way, didn't Ray Manzarek produce and/or play keyboards on Echo &
the Bunnymen's version of "People Are Strange"?

I did notice the physical resemblance of Jason Patric to Jim, and
blend with the Jim Morrison poster, but I didn't understand the "why"
behind it. I figured someone with some influence over the making of
the "Lost Boys" movie must have been a Doors fan. I didn't realize
that Ray Manzarek had been involved with the Bunnymen. Your comments
are interesting and it proves there is always more to learn. I have
read NOHGOA, a photo journal by Frank Lisandrio (I'm sure I spelled
that name wrong), and Light My Fire (Ray Manzarek's book) but am still
far from knowing everything about the Doors/Jim Morison. In his book
Ray tells the story of how Jim met Pamela, which is something that is
not addressed in NOHGOA and that I was curious about. Ray also has
some slightly negative comments about John Densmore; so I guess I will
read John's book next to get the other side of it.

The 5-hour workprint of "Apocalypse Now" has several Doors songs,
including "Summer's Almost Gone" and "When the Music's Over". They all
fit very well.

Anyone know of other groups who refer to the Doors or Morrison in their
songs? The only one I can think of off hand is in the Dead Milkmen's
song, Bitchin Camero. It's in the intro dialog, and one guy mentions
that his favorite cover band, Crystal Shi*(sounds for all the world like
he says Shit, but it may actually be Ship) is going to be at a club. He
goes on to say "Yeah, they do a Doors show, you'd be really impressed.
In fact it goes a little like this... 'Love me two times baby, love me
twice today. Love me two times, girl, cause I've got AIDS. Love me two
times baby, once for tomorrow, once cause I got AIDS". The second guy
responds "Pretty good Jim Morrison impression there. I hope those guys
have a good sense of humor and don't take us into court..."

Thanks for the Dead Milkmen info, the song sounds great. Is "Bitchin
Camaro" on the same CD as that "Drinking Bleach" song? I think I may
have it socked away somewhere...
As for Morrison/Doors references in songs, the only ones I can think of
are that cheesy Righteous Brothers song from the 70's (Rock N Roll
Heaven) and a Frank Zappa lyric that starts out something like "On the
streets of West Hollywood, where Jim Morrison once stood..." It was
Zappa's sarcastic take on the Doors revival that happened in the early
80's, which he thought was ridiculous. I don't remember the name of the
song, sorry!

In the early '80s there was a Doors cover band by the name of Crystal Ship
(are they still around?? Anybody know?), and I caught their act at
Salisbury Beach. Pretty good, especially "L.A. Woman"... I honestly
couldn't tell the difference between their sound and the Doors, they were
that good. The singer didn't look at all like Morrison, but he sure sang
like him.

I caught "The Crystal Ship" at Toad's Place in New Haven in 1979 or 1980.
Actually I didn't think the lead singer was too good and he used too many
obscenities but the music was good and being a Doors obsessive at that time I
enjoyed seeing them. I don't know if they're still around.

There's a Dead Kennedys song (a punk rock group) called "Triumph of
the Swill," about the mediocre music that appeared in the early to mid
- 80s. The full verse goes:

"Ever wonder why commercial radio's so bad?
It’s 'cause someone upstairs wants it that way.
If the Doors or John Lennon were getting started now
The industry wouldn't sign 'em in a million years."
