Her drumming on Talk On Corners was very solid, although the band's use of
drum machines made it difficult to figure out when she was playing and when
she wasn't. So the jury on her ability was still very much out. That changed
when I bought the video of their 1998 St. Patrick's Day performance at the
Royal Albert Hall. Caroline's drumming was superb and there wasn't a drum
machine in sight. In fact, I was so impressed that I wished they hadn't
wheeled Mick Fleetwood on to the stage for "Haste To The Wedding" and "Toss
The Feathers" and allowed Caroline to play by herself.
The final proof that Caroline is very good indeed came at Glastonbury. I
didn't go to the festival (because 90% of the music performed there was
utter shite), but I did see The Corrs perform "So Young" and "Toss The
Feathers" on one of the BBC's highlights shows. I was absolutely stunned by
Caroline's drumming, particularly on the latter of the two songs. Her
performance was at least as good as - and arguably better than - Simon
Phillips' original work on Forgiven Not Forgotten. Quite magnificent.
Caroline's drumming is straightforward and unflashy but brilliantly
effective. There are no histrionics, she doesn't pull silly faces like Mick
Fleetwood, she just pounds out a solid beat and when the time comes for her
to provide a bit of rhythmic flair she delivers in spades. She has some way
to go before she reaches the giddy heights occupied by greats like Manu
Katche, but at this rate it won't be long before she gets there.
A gorgeous woman who plays the drums like a diva - it doesn't get much
better than that!
P.S. If anyone missed the issue of Q featuring the greatest band on earth
(i.e. The Corrs), I wouldn't worry about it. The article about them was
crap - their reporter spent 3 months on the road with them, and we only got
seven measly pages. Still, there were some nice pictures of the girls.

Very true, Tom. But then who would you rather watch bouncing up and down on

That part of the sleeve just refers to her general role in the band -
she doesn't actually drum on any specific track, read the notes after
the lyrics and you will see that it is always a drum machine or a
session drummer.

I realise that this is very old news, but did anyone see the BBC documentary

They used Erin Shore AND Little Wing in that, proving once and for all that

Hmmm, I don't think that Sky would plunge to the utterly tasteless depths of using
Britney Spears to advertise a programme, unlike the Beeb recently...
Anyway I've lost all respect for the Beeb, their programming is crap and they've
lost all the football to Sky (who's coverage is far far better anyway)

The bodhran is indeed a traditional Irish instrument. It's a handheld drum
made of goatskin that you hit with a stick called a 'tipper'. Check out the

I thought the greatest team in the country was Jordan, and I don't recall

They were too busy playing football. I'm sure any of them could do better

No, Ginola is God with a Jesus haircut (and now goatee) who does shampoo
commercials

Yes, but as the group has been positively dead over the last week there is
obviously very little Corrs-type stuff to talk about, and it's nice to talk
about anything to the thoroughly decent people on this group anyway
Tom

I somehow doubt it, although I will admit that Damon's been driving like a
wally this year, and it's all because of these new tyres. You see, he can't
drive a car with four grooves in the front tyres (that's his excuse,
anyway!)
This afternoon's Belgian Grand Prix was about as exciting as the World Cup
final - pretty tedious, in other words. Still, at least DC won (he's a mate

There's not one drummer in sight on this discussion, unfortunately ....
apart from me. (I think)
Unluckily, Caroline's drumming is nothing out the very ordinary. In fact,
she plays the
same breaks all the time, which makes her live drumming somewhat tiring. If
you
watch the St. Patrick's Day concert very closely you will find quite a
number of
instances where she is playing along with a drum machine, which I have no
problem
with. That is very difficult because you HAVE to keep time with the machine.
She
receives her clicks via cans.
Nevertheless I DO like Caroline a lot because she's a woman drummer which
one
doesn't see a lot ...... actually she gets my votes just for being the
drummer :-))

I tried to learn the darn things when I was younger, but, being a lazy sod,
I couldn't be arsed to put in all the necessary practise. I hammered away on
some dreadful Cheetah drum pads for a while, then gave up. I'm still toying
with the idea of learning some day, but I don't think my joints could cope!
Re your comments about Caroline. I more or less agree. I also think her
drumming is a bit repetitive, especially when you compare it to other
drummers. I've just listened to Nik Kershaw's brilliant 15 Minutes album and
Steve Washington's drums are superb, really inventive and unpredictable.
I've also got a copy of Peter Gabriel's Secret World Live video and Manu
Katche's drumming is, for lack of a better word, awesome. Even the nutter
that was playing drums on Shania Twain's Miami concert (shown last night on
BBC1) was great. Caroline definitely needs to study other drummers and learn
from them. She can't go on playing the same stuff all the time, but I'm sure
she won't. In fact, she's already showing signs of improvement. As I said in
my original message, her drumming at Glastonbury was brilliant,
significantly better than at the Royal Albert Hall, and I'm sure it will get
even better with time.
But on the other hand, as you so rightly said, Caroline is a woman drummer,
and I cannot think of a better combination of attributes than that!
Mike.
Re your comments off topic: I can also recommend Nik Kershaw's new album. I
saw his concert in Zurich in April which was held at a small club but
nevertheless blew me away. I'm very happy he's back because I always like
his stuff a lot. There are not many songwriters that can weave such
suprising tunes, changes of scale and the likes into brilliant and, on the
surface, unseeming pop songs.
If you like drummers and drums and not only dig pop music, do check out
H-Blockx "Fly Eyes"(listen to that footwork, it's awesome), Dream Theater
(same applies here), Drum Theatre (an 80's band with only one album that
never got credit for the good music) and last but not least Toto (with Jeff
Porcaro or Simon Philips).

Absolutely agree with you about Lifting Me. It sucks with a capital S.
Re Nik Kershaw. I must admit it is very nice to know that someone else out
there
appreciates his music - I was starting to think that my brother and I were
the only
remaining fans of the greatest living Bristolian left in the world! I have
always liked
his stuff, right from Wouldn't It Be Good in the early 80s. I'm rather
annoyed that
I haven't been able to find his first four albums (Human Racing, The Riddle,
Radio
Musicola and The Works) on CD. I've got the first three on vinyl, but I'm a
bit of
a digital freak I'm afraid. I've got a couple of compilation CDs, but some
of his best
stuff isn't on them.
Re your other drumming recommendations. I never knew that Simon Philips
played
with Toto - you learn something new every day! Another drummer that has made
an
impression on me is a guy called Christophe Deschamps - he played the drums
on Jean-Michel Jarre's album 'Waiting For Cousteau', and they were mighty
impressive. Another lasting drum-related memory I have is of Bill Bruford
going
berserk on a Simmons kit on an old BBC programme called Rock School. He
had them hooked up to a synthesizer so that each pad played a different
noise.
Some people might say that the result was a bloody row, but I thought it was
brilliant.
Mike.
I've said it before, I'll say it again.... I actually quite like it - it's
by no means on of their best songs but it's still pretty good!
I'm obviously quite mad ;-)

Caroline didn't play Drums on TOC... it was all session drummers and drum
machines. She only played Bodhràn, sang backing vocals and so on.
