None of that is techno. The proper classification or "umbrella" term would be
electronic music.

people say this is totally wrong so id love to hear what you think it is.>>

Electronic is a "Super Genre" as you say. Techno is not a Super Genre, it is a
subset of electronic music with subsets of its own too (i.e. minimal, tribal,
melodic, Detroit, experimental).

Don't get too caught up in labeling artists and placing music in genres it's
generally a waste of time.

My favorite quote: "If you're talking about techno, know what techno
is. Buy some shit from Detroit and you'll find out."
It's from a track by DJ T-1000 from 1991 (I think). A lot has happened
since then and it's happening in more places than Detroit but to "find
out" you might want to visit http://www.submerge.com and take it from
there.

The discussion we've got into is an endless one.. for definitions of any
electronic music style tend to be quite subjective. Also, major cd producing
companies tend to use names of new genres for their cds, whatever the actual
genre might be, just to sell more. This of course has a lot of influence on
the public. ..and who am I to define Techno when 90 percent of the listeners
have a different definition...

However, when one would want discuss music, like we do here, some commonly
accepted genres might be useful. What if I say I like techno and you would
send my nothing but trance links...

Keeping all this in mind I'll give you some of my own definitions. To me
techno is several things.. Techno is, to me, both a genre within electronic
music (is there still acoustic music?) and a Super genre, like you say, that
encompasses styles like trance and hardhouse.. Techno in the purest sense is
an electronic music style where the beat generally occurs 4 times a measure
after the same interval and the melody should repeat every measure or every
2 measures. This is different from trance for instance where the melody
generally repeats after 4 measures. Drum & is Different because the beat
doesn't occur 4 times a measure after the same interval. On the other hand,
I'm sure you could find a track that does obey to the to "rules" suggested
above but would generally not be accounted to be a techno track.. Maybe
some of the samples used in the track are very "trancy".. I'm sure there are
more patterns (like the ones above) that help you determine the genre of a
particular track, but there will always be borderline cases.

Actually, it is much easier, now I think of it, to determine the genre of a
track that is not Techno. Maybe, when you're really sure a track doesn't
belong to any other genre, then you can say it's techno.. ;-) After all, I
think of techno as the backbone of the electronic music Super genre in
general. Techno now is a lot different from the techno from 10 years ago,
but it is still techno...

I do sometimes use Techno in a broader sense though.. just as the French and
the Germans seem to do. Here in Holland I could talk to friends about Club,
Clubtrance, Trance, Hard Trance, Hardhouse, Techno etc.. and the older term
House Music is still accepted as the Super genre, but most of that would be
called Techno in France and Germany.. And I think they're right! Because any
electronic music is "techno" (adjective). I even use the "techno" word to
describe clothing, shoes, interiors and electrical devices!

conclusion: none

next party: Awakenings (dec 9th, Amsterdam)

Remco
