Sounds a little 'snobby' to me. Prodigy are still making great music and 'The
Fat of The Land', judging by what I've heard, is gonna be a brilliant record.

Do you judge your techno artists on how they dress or their music??
'Experience' still holds well after 5 years and is still one of my most often
played techno records. 'Firestarter' was a great song and the 'Emperion Mix'
was excellent. Sounds like a case of 'Hey, Prodigy are popular now, so they
suck' to me. Get over it!

PS - And to the first person, the Prodigy tour has been postponed due to them
wanting to complete the new record. Look for them to come back in June w/ all
tickets being honored.

I completely agree. Although I don't think "Experience" holds well now,
when I play it I often cringe, except at some brilliant moments
("Weather Experience"). The Prodigy were the first techno I liked as
well, and have done for 5 years, altough I like Orbital and Chemical
Brothers much more now, probably because they're putting new stuff out,
and the Prodge aren't.

I'm getting bloody of sick of waiting for that sodding LP!

Well, Keith does anyhow.Liam is still quite normal. Too bad that they
snort coke now. And, yes, I do agree. It seems the more popualr a band
gets. the less quality the music has in it. Oh pop culture..... Isn't it
wonderful?

when someone says they don't like the new Prodge? Look, one thing's for
sure; their 2 newest releases have next to nothing in common with their
older ones. Can't you UNDERSTAND that someone may not actually like the
new style?

However, it's a pretty moot point, because you can't deny that this style
has _somewhere_ (possibly unconciously) been created to sell. The Prodge
_knew_ they couldn't do any better in Europe (short of becoming a eurodance
group) so they had to make something which'd be accepted in the "we-hate-
techno" countries like the States.

And that means, drop the 4/4 bassdrums. Don't put in any really synthesized-
sounding sounds. Make sure there's guitar in there. Definitely include
lyrics. Yes, it's still techno, yes it's not utter crap, yes i agree you
shouldn't judge a band by it's image, BUT: this newer stuff _is_ geared
toward the mainstream audience. And (in my opinion) the mainstream audience
has got pretty bad taste in music. Gimme "Speedway", "Claustrophobic Sting",
"Weather Experience"... etc anyday.

Nope, more on the lines of about 6-7 tracks that have been played live and
have appeared on several boots. You mean to tell me you haven't heard

I can understand that, but what I can't understnad is what the guy wrote

THAT'S the kind of bullshit statement I was commenting on. What does
'maturing' in techno have to do with SUDDENLY coming to the realization that
a band now sucks??? The guy's only comeback was, 'well...I still like their
older stuff'. Then why did he say they suck??? He couldn't even properly
back his statement without contradicting himself.

Fine, you have your opinion, but when you defend someone who uses the excuse
that he has 'matured' in techno to say he doesn't like a band anymore (sounds
more like he's saying 'I'm too underground for the mainstream') it makes you
look just as bad. I personally don't give a crap what people think of the new
Prodigy, just don't try and pass them off as un-cool, just because they are
popular.

I still like George Michael, if that makes me un-cool, then fine! At least
I'm not afraid of losing my precious 'underground' status!

This is all assuming a lot, and I don't know what you back your
arguments up with. And I *can* deny that their style has been created to
sell - you seem to think that if something becomes really popular then
it has been designed to sell, it doesn't follow. Btw, I don't much like
Firestarter and Breathe, they are OK though. I don't need to defend them
thats what I'm saying. You don't need to justify your dislikes with
this. You like to think that people who don't like what you do are

I think it's more a case of the mainstream audience is geared towards
the Prodigy, for the simple reason that they like the tracks. Prodigy
just happened to create something that was very popular. Knowing that
this style is popular, they could go on making very similar tracks -
they would become unpopular after a while if they just made more
Firestarter type records, so your imaginary formula for sucess fucks up.
Public taste is dynamic, it changes, you can't judge it, people who keep
trying to be popular are riding a wave (David Bowie comes to mind), it
really doesn't matter in the end does it ? You like, you like, you hate,
you hate. I hope you continue to like whatever you do, because it's
creative - but that might be just what the Prodigy are doing as well.

No no. You see, i'm not embarrassed to admit i own every U96 album. And
why? Because the music is GOOD. Sure, it's commercial, but there's love
behind the music. There's a heart. They're just making the music they
enjoy, and sometimes it does well (Das Boot) and sometimes it doesn't
(Love Sees No Color). But they just keep going.

Firestarter's an okay track... Nothing special, but i don't consider it
crap. Breathe on the other hand is an OBVIOUS spinoff from Firestarter.
It's not similar technically, but it is similar.... There's something
missing from that track... It sounds too rushed... too made-in-5-minutes-
to-get-some-more-cash.

It works. Why do you think all these Faithless/BBE/Sash/blahblah groups
are doing well at the moment? Good producers anticipate what the market
wants and make tracks which they KNOW will sell well. That's their job,
that's how they earn money.

That's why it changes... What was in a year ago? Eurodance... We've been
through breakbeat, club house, the current chemical beat fad... That's
how the commercial music business works.

Why is it suddenly popular? Because the producers want it to be.

You may not realize it, but producers have a very big hand in what is "in"
and what isn't. The first time i realized this was about a year ago.
A producer said "the next big thing in dance music is heavy guitar lines
and hard beats". This was BEFORE Firestarter was released. I'm not making
this up, i mean it.

Perhaps, I can't proove it one way or the other. There are often a
certain amount of similarities between releases, I don't think you would
have been quite so quick to point them out if the records hadn't sold as
much.

With corrupt producers yes ! :) I'm not denying that this sort of thing
happens. A lot of these records you mention come out on white label to
"test the water" so to speak. Theres hundreds of the these house tracks,
they get played by big name DJ's on peoples holidays and suchlike,
people come home wanting to know what that anthem was and then it starts
shifting big units back home.

I don't think the fashion of the time is dictated by some power above,
theres influences all over the place I think it's a lot more chaotic
than that. Even without big industry in music peoples tastes change from
one thing to another, infact industry would most likely wish they could
find just one formula and milk it as much as possible. (Like the boy
band formula....working quite well so far. Wish these young teenagers
would wake up sometimes..)

It was bound to get noticed sooner or later, the press and radio & TV
are more powerfull than the producer by far, (in terms of influence not
control, people who are more easily influenced might be thought to be
controlled but thats not 100% true). It's popular because people are
buying it now - it's that simple, IMO.

He might have been listening to the Jilted LP which came out way before
Firestarter, who knows. He might have been living out his fantasies of
rock and roll ruling the world once again. The thing is he didn't
control anything, he made a prediction that worked. I must have read
hundreds of similar opinions on whats going to be big, at the moment two
new things "Trance-core" and (no name yet) a blend of house and drum &
bass. These are being pushed as being the next big thing. If the two
scenes fall flat on their face you most likely won't even notice, if
they become really big you'll say "told you so, producers have huge
power etc".

I don't disagree with what you are saying totally, it's just the extent
to which you think it goes to. To me that seems like the underground
paranoia. The Prodigy have been refusing to go to award ceremonies to
try and win back the respect of people like yourself. Why would they
even bother, what would you do in their shoes ? Would you release
limited pressings on white labels ?

I might be missing the point, it is just my opinion. I'll leave it
there, we can agree to disagree if you like.
