* thanks to Rod from the Wednesday night show No Media Monopoly for filling
in for me last week...
* the postal strike up here in Canada continues even despite the threat of
back to work legislation, so if you really need to get something to me
soon, let me know and I'll give you an address where I can recieve stuff
via courier...
* and finally, my apologies for taking so long to get these playlists sent
out lately, it's been tough to find the time to type 'em up and get some
reviews together before the weekend following the show. I'll try to speed
things up a bit soon, but no promises...

MINI-REVIEWS

Astral Matrix - Number 6 12" EP (o.o.b.e./Silent)
Some nice dancefloor action from the thriving S.F. Bay area scene. Elements
in the mix include smooth, melodic techno, a touch of breakbeat and acid,
and some deep, deep bass. As Cartman would say, "Sweeeeeet!"

Amon Tobin - Piranha Breaks CDEP (Ninja Tune)
Mr. Tobin continues his quest to find the perfect mixture of jazzy Latin
rhythms and dark drum'n'bass with four more masterful tracks. It's a great
ride, and like the best EPs, it leaves you wanting more.

Magick A - Lemon, SAAB 96 and a book CD (April)
Magick A is Norway's Havid Engmark, a veteran musician who has done
everything from playing guitar in a swing-jazz band to drumming for the
Royal Guard of Norway. His numerous influences show up subtly on his oddly
named debut album, but the main ingredient is high quality, chilled out
drum'n'bass.

pHrack R - Computer Deck Aid 12" (Fused & Bruised)
The FAB posse strike again with another big beat platter of epic
proportions. The a-side is a brain-shredding mixture of hefty, junglized
beats and crazy acid synth that actually threatened to bounce the needle
right off the record. The b-side track, "That's What We Are", is a more
acid-tinged number that didn't kick my ass quite so soundly, but it's still
pretty wicked.

Animals on Wheels - Designs and Mistakes CD (Ninja Tune)
First full-length from AOW, aka Andy Coleman, a co-owner of the seriously
whacked Bovinyl label. I was expecting more of a full-on drill'n'bass
effort, but was pleased to find a more laid back approach in much of the
material, making it reminiscent in places of some of µ-Ziq's more melodic
moments. Nice change of pace from the Ninja's.

Tim "Love" Lee - Confessions of a Selector CD (Tummy Touch/Three
Sixty/Silent)
The 70's meet the 90's on this relentlessly groovy disc. It's got it all: a
cover collage of vintage imagery from the Decade of Disco, song titles like
"Ruffbutt" and "Wack Wack", and closing "suite" of tracks involving a truly
twisted parental disciple ritual that has to be heard to be believed.

Various - The Death of Cool 2x12" (Noodles)
Man-oh-man, this shit is fucked up! The debut release from Noodles - a
label being run by Si Begg (Cabbageboy, Buckfunk 3000) and friends that is
self-described "The Stupidest Recording Organization In The World" - this
double pack features everything from superhard drill'n'bass to dark,
burbling ambience to the world's first ever country-dub track. This is the
future of techno, my friends. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
