In my youth I always assumed Tangerine Dream was under the influence of
hallucinogens while creating their music.

But I've read of several very strange artists or musicians who insist
they don't use drugs.

Have the members of TD ever made a statement one way or the other?

TD don't use drugs, though they certainly did long ago. Edgar Froese once
said "We stopped taking drugs in 1973." More recently he has claimed that
drugs "obscure musical creativity," and "have nothing to do with music
itself, more with participating on the cultural level." He visits some of
the clubs around Berlin and is not impressed with the open usage of
substances - "the music is sometimes great and the people would be great if
they were not completely out of their minds."
I don't know of any other statement made by anyone in the band, but it does
look as though for nearly 30 years now TD haven't needed drugs to make
their music, and I've never needed any to enjoy their music.

OK Maff so some TD albums are not as good as others, but I don't think there
are any that I COMPLETELY dislike from start to finish.

Those that I DO like most (in no particular order): Zeit, Ricochet, Tangram,
Logos, so I seem to share a lot of people's preference for the early stuff.
Of more recent offerings I like Valentine Wheels (probably coz I was there),
Mars Polaris and Seven Letters From Tibet. Inferno I haven't heard yet.

Cheers now. Keep meditating electronically

Well I doubt they ever used drugs since on the TD website you can read
that no TD member smokes at all.
