I was in a discount store, and saw a 1970s compilation
in a CD rack. It had Hot Love and Metal Guru on it, but
by Mickey Finn's T-Rex!!!!!!!!!!!
All else on the CD seemed to be by the original acts.
What gives? Is the manager of Mickey's estate
flogging this stuff to record companies for bargain
royalties?

I'd suspest it's one of those "for maximun fidelity enjoyment new stereo
recording have been used on the tracks marked with a *, where possible, as
many of the original personel have been used" --e.g. to avoid royalties we
re-recorded the track with a guy who claimed to be the brother of the bass
player's roadie. And often all but one or two tracks are marked with the
dread *.

Sometimes it's even the band trying to get money from a song they
recorded under a poor contract that they get nothing from. And
sometimes these are even good alternate versions.

Mickey Finn might have even toured doing T-rex stuff as "Mickey Finn's
T-rex" after Marc's death and it could be considered a legit alternate
recording/cover.

^^^^^^
Usually you want orignal artist and *orginal recording* unless you are
collecting an artist/group and want every version they recorded. If you're
fanatical enough you might even -want- the version by the lightman's
girlfriend :-)
