This may seem trite but who do you think is better, The Smiths or Suede,
in the categories below?

1. Lyrics
2. Music
3. Image

I know they're different groups from different times and all that but I
am just curious what people think.

As for Brett Anderson's lyrics, in my opinion, they are some of the best
around, though they can be repetitious. "High on diesel", "Sci fi
lullaby".

Well, I'm just curious about the Smiths/Suede thing.

Why? I happen to like both, and don't see why comparisons between the
two have to be made....it's not a competition.

That is not the point. I am just curious what people think. Brett
Anderson or Morrissey, who is the better lyricist? I think BA's are
more "poetic" but M's are more true.

Almost always Suede.

Suede.

Suede.

I'm not huge on the Smiths :)

Lulu,

thank's for giving your opinion on this totally retarded issue I
raised. I know it's stupid but I'm still curious so others please
respond.

When I heard the first Suede singles in 92 I really hoped that they
would turn out to be the next Smiths, unfortunately they seem to have
turned into the next Duran Duran.

Well Bernard is great and Suede do have their moments without him, but
Marr or any of Moz's recent collaborators (ie Whyte, Boorer, or Cobrin)
do have a certain existential sound reminicent of Alex North's film
soundtracks for classics such as "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf."

Like I said, Duran Duran. Give me Moz any old day, esp. the cover for
Roy's Keen. Really beautiful.

Thats a toughie.. But Il give my 3rd option..

Lyrics:

Suede..Definately.. Much more poetic..More range..However Morrissey has
more classic lyrics...

Music..

Suede for their overall sound.. But the Smiths for setting the
foundation.. However I would give Strangelove a tie too. Patrick at his
best is a better singer than Brett or Morrissey..(please dont flame me.)
I just like his more masculine voice. Their new album sucks tho...

Style..

Suede...Hands down...

Mozzer's lyrics were a lot better (especially the Smiths stuff - with
really good 'imagery') than Brett's ... however Brett's voice sounds
really good (in a Bowie-ish sort of way - possibly even better than
Mozzer's).

>2. Music

I think Bernard's later compositions are a lot more ambitious than
Marr's ever got (especially the Dog Man Star material. Especially the
tracks on the LP from "The 2 of Us" through to "Still Life").

For straight-up guitar stuff, Marr did do some nice things though
("Heaven Knows..."). However Bernard's compositions still definitely
stand up to the test of time.

Let's wait and see...

Suede...primarily because they ALL look good (The Smiths' rhythmn
section lacked a bit of style...compare this to the recent shots of
Suede). The Smiths are at a disadvantage since they were around in
the 80's tho.

Nothing beats the classic look of Smiths LP and Single covers
(artwork/photos) though. They still are something special.

I think musically Suede, image, Suede, but lyrically - the smiths i find
more touching and emotional, suede's lyrics are fun and sometimes deep,
but the smiths almost always is relateable

Unfortunately? Dear me, I'd take the rollicking nonsense of Duran Duran
over the whine of Morrissey & Marr any day of the week.

Not that I'm advocating the idea that Suede are like Duran Duran, mind you.
