Bernard left Suede because he was homophobic so there was
obviously tension between the band members...also Bernard being a
genius works too fast for snail Brett.

Would you please tell me the meaning of "homophobic"? What is it?

Best Regards,

Dolly, how can you say that Brett is slow?
and it's only the band and Bernie who knows
why he left.

the McAlmont thing, i don't understand....but i know for fact, he
couldn't stand working with McAlmont because he was gay, but he
teamed up with McAlmont because of him talent...not his sexuality.

Dolly,

You are full of shit. BERNARD BUTLER IS NOT HOMOPHOBIC! The
collaboration with McAlmont had run it's course, that's all. Obviously
Bernie wanted to get on and do his own thing, which he is now doing.

Aren't any of you ashamed to be speculating such cruel rumours about
Bernard?

Let's also put this stupid Bernard vs. Suede shit behind us and enjoy
the great music made by both, okay?

my god.. all these bullshit about Bernard being homophobic or Brett
being slow... where the hell did you guys get these ideas from??
Bernard is definitely NOT homophobic and Brett may not be the
fastest-speaking person, but he's NOT slow-output (listen to all the new
"coming up" b-sides!!!!)

As for why Bernard left Suede..... who cares? He's not happy in the
band, so he chose to leave. And like he said, "I am not insane and I am
happy."
The genius is still making great music, that's all that matters.

This isn't, as you put it, bullshit. In his famous pre-split
Vox interview Bernard mentioned he hated the pace at which Brett
wrote lyrics, he also said a lot of other things. This interview
went too far for many members of suede, it speeded up the whole
split.
another thing ...Butler hated McAlomnt being overtly outrageous, to
the point of stopping him wearing a top hat (at a jaunty angle) on the Jools
holland show - you can see McAlmont wearing it during the introductions
but not after that, bernard had a few words with him.

you have got to appreciate, the MUSIC is all that Bernard cares about
and I respect him for that.

then I don't think Bernard was right at that... :)

We all know what McAlmont has said about Bernard being homophobic, but
guess what? he had to 'apologize" and take that comment back a few days
later.

And ermm... what is this? we were talking about Bernard being accused
(homophobia), certainly no person with certain intelligence would think
that "hating all the trappings and dressing up" equals to being
homophobic... so what's your point?

And of course, I know bloody well Bernard only cares about the music and
not the trappings.. and you can be sure I respect him for this!

I was just angry that people could even think of that "reason" for his
leaving.

Does anybody have a transcript of this "famous pre-split Vox interview"
online? I would love to read it...

Look, look...this has never been satisfactorily answered, has it? I don't
think it can be, either, until the band themselves outright go and say
what went on. And owing to lawyers, etc. I don't think they're likely to.

We know what Bernard thought of Brett. He obviously experienced some of
the same things with McAlmont -- being over the top, etc. It's hard to
say Bernard isn't a bit of an ego himself, though...I mean, he failed to
understand why all the ten-minute fretwanking guitar epics he wrote
weren't suitable for Suede, and he obviously wrangled with Buller about
how DMS should sound. This is what we DO know, but we'll never have any
clue of the inner-band politics that went on.
I'm of the opinion that all Bernard ever wanted to do was play guitar.
To be left to his own devices. He wanted complete control, and now he's
got it. And Suede are better off without him, I think. Don't flame me
for this... they are. Bernard wrote some of the most beautiful and
powerful music ever made while he was with the band, and I'm always going
to enjoy it and respect him for it. But if he *hadn't* left, it's
guaranteed that the band would've spilt. And what a lovely situation that
would be! Don't decry Oaksie's stuff -- it's a logical progression.

How would you know for certain that "Bernard left Suede because he was
homophobic"? I'm very curious to know which magazine you read this, and
which member of Suede made this statement, that Bernard was homophobic.
From what I understand, Bernard didn't like the direction that Dog Man
Star was going. You can read this for yourself on Bernard Butler's
homepage, if it hasn't been changed.

Why all the attacks on Bernard Butler......so, someone has met this man
once and called him a pain in the ass. Just because you met someone,
doesn't mean you KNOW the person!!!! Until you get to know someone, how
can you make such judgements? "He is a pain in the ass." Why? I suppose
he didn't kiss your ass sufficiently enough, is that it? Get off it!!!!
Check out Bernard's homepage, there's a lot of input from Bernard himself
on that page! He answers questions in his own words. I urge people to
check it out. Why all the rash speculation on personality traits? Suede
is a great band, it's the music I love. Why turn it into a sort of soap
opera?!
