After finally hearing Coming Up, the only real flaw that I notice is the
production. It is *very* overproduced in parts - and Buller has done no
favors to Brett's voice either. Brett always sounds much live than the
helium sucking vocals on Coming Up. I really really wish that Suede work
with a new producer. Look what it did for Pulp. His N Hers(produced by ed
buller) is a good album, but a Different Class is a truly great album.
Don't get me wrong, I know the quality of the songs has something to do
with that. But the production is also very important. The right producer
can bring out a band's real strengths and talents, making them shine even
brighter than before. Buller just lacks this quality. In fact, he seems
to have hampered both Suede and Pulp's sound, as both sound far better
live than on the records he produced. Pulp were wise to drop him. Now I
just Suede would follow suit. Just about any producer I can think of
would probably be better than him...

I still love Coming Up though - it's an album that triumphs over it's
production.

love to all,

ya know, i was ready to throw 'dogmanstar' directly into
the toilet upon 1st listen after staying in line at
the store until midnight the very 1st minute it was
released. it took a good week before i was able
to figure out what was going on with the record.
i blame this experience on ed buller. theres so
much damn compression, so much effect on brett's
voice.

keep in mind that skinny puppy, his name
is alive, and cocteau twins are among my
other favorite groups: groups who use much
knob-twiddling. i think that suede ought to
draft steve lillywhite (moz, u2, kirsty maccoll)
or stephen street (moz, cranberries, durutti column)
to produce next time. i've only heard the 2 trash
singles, but it seems that buller is still shwagging
things over for suede, and the american audience
probably wont tolerate such stoopid-sounding music.
we yanks are programmed to make instant value
judgements about music. on the 1st listen, even
'trash' sounded like crap.

Steve Lillywhite and Steven Street are both very good choices...even
someone like Flood might work very well with Suede. It's a shame that
they seem so reluctant to try a new producer...(sigh)

Couldn't agree more with this. BULLER IS BAD. I don't have anything
against him personally and I even like Node, but keep him away from
Suede.

Craig.

You're not alone...
After listening to the album "Coming Up" all the way through, I too had
the exact
same thoughts. The fact that Suede's sound is becoming very typical. Let
them
expand...and the only way to do that is to bring upon a different producer
to work
with.
I always thought Brian Eno would suit them perfectly, especially when I
heard about the band adding a keyboard player.
Ed Buller is suffocating this band. Its time for Suede to move on.

I think "Coming Up" is a brilliant lp. While it's true that Suede hasn't
expanded much, doesn't mean anything. If they were to do something
different, they might alienate the fans. I can see (and expect) them to
try some other sound, but this would have been to soon.
And yes! Brian Eno would be ideal! Look at what he's done for James!!!

PS - Anyone listen to The Ocean Blue. A brilliant band. :)

Unfortunately (or fortunately) no I'm not, although I had an
embarrassing evening once playing in a band that supported them.
