Steely Fans,

I just found two books on SD.
One is authored by Brian Sweet entitled "Steely Dan - The complete
guide to their music."
The other book is written by Don Breithaupt (mastemind behind Monkey
House), with the title "Steely Dan's Aja"

Does anybody know these books ?

Cheers

the latter is part of a series of small pocket paperback books on
recordings. they're mildly entertaining, although i've not seen this
particular installment. surely there's not much new that is illuminated (i
certainly hope i'm wrong), but should be enjoyable enough...

Thanks for the insights. I'll expand once I know more.

The Breithaupt book is more fun if you're a musician yourself, but I
enjoyed it as just a fan of Steely Dan's music. Also, Don has had the
chance to talk to Donald about Aja and there are quite a few quotes
throughout the book.

Sweet's book is basically a rundown of the records and who played on
them.
Might be just as well to update the bookshelf with the latest edition
of his Reelin' In The Years Steely Dan biography. It's now including
Fagen's Morph The Cat ... but thanks to Fagen/Becker's rush of
creatiity lacking the soon-to-be Circus Money.

can you expound upon the additional material in the updated issue of sweet's
book?

OK, I have read the book by Don Breithaupt on Aja. Nice and
entertaining read. In particular as Don Breithaupt is a proficient
musician, the book contains a number of nice explanations concerning
the harmonic structures used on Aja. It also contains a number of
explanations on the lyrics which I found interesting. Small little
book, entertaining, great subject matter (!) - I recommend: go for it
