My personal favorite: Pete Christlieb's amazing turn on
"Deacon Blues" , which seems doubly appropriate considering
the words to the song's chorus.
Glad to hear other opinions.

Mark

Totally agree Simon, but that's too easy. How about favorite horn charts?
My vote goes to "Caves Of Altamira" and the little flurry at the end of
"Sign In Stranger". Peace
Hi Mark
Yep, that honey sax in Deacon Blues comes pretty high for me but.......
the top Dan sax solo so far HAS to be Phil Woods alto on Dr Wu from Katy
Lied.
He plays the track out at the end, which is stunning, but the piece I'm
talking about is the main storm of a solo immediately after the first
chorus. Especially the trilled glissando'ish run as the track calms down
for the next verse.
Ahhhhh -- Orgasmic.....
er... cold shower, I think..

Well this isn't really a sax solo, but how about the synchronised horn riff
at the end of "... California tumbles into the sea.." on "My old school". I
wish it was extended a bit further

Without a doubt, the sax solo on 'Dr. Wu' is the tastiest of all the Dan
albums IMHO, of course. Sure, Wayne Shorter smokes on 'Aja', and the
quality was better later on when the science was in place to *make* it
better, but that 'Wu' solo (don't remember the player) had such a 'feel'
to it, one I've heard local players emulate for years (esp. the line in
the last four bars before the verse).
I was waiting to see if anyone has tastes on this subject similar to mine,
but apparently not (yet?). My favorite sax bit is on My Old School. While
the "solo" may not be memorable to others, I love it, especially the way
the sax and guitar parts interact. Truly a fine piece of music that I always
wish went on longer (when I was younger and even more foolish I would up
the volume as the song faded to catch just a little bit more).

Well said - that's one I hadn't thought about, and one of
my favorite Dan songs, too, for it's wit and humor as well
as the lovely vocal work on the chorus. I doubt that I'm
alone in my appreciation.

The player's name was (or is) Phil Woods, man that is some alto. No
question about it! And I thought I was the only one who loved that
last little low part at the end of the solo, the last 10
notes...that's my favorite.
My 2 cents,
Rob
