From 'TV Week' in the Sunday Mirror:

MEL CASTS HER SPELL

ENJOYING her well-deserved rest from the music biz almost as much as we are,
Scary Spice travelled to West Africa to take part in the surprisingly
engaging documentary Mel B: Voodoo Princess (C4, last night)

And watching Mel walking through the voodoo stalls in Benin reminded me of
the last time I'd seen her among so many evil-looking doll-like figures -
SECC Arena, April 1997, I think it was.

"Someone once told me I've got a long, skinny, spirit guide," said Mel
explaining one of the reasons for her trip (and possibly the reason why she
put up with Posh for so long).

Mel said she also wanted to explode some of the myths surrounding the voodoo
religion, but that didn't stop her giving Emma Bunton a call to see if she
wanted a spell bringing back.

Emma's voice was slightly muffled on the other end of the line, but I'm sure
I heard her say something that sounded like "anything that will make people
buy my album".

Equally, Mel's quest for the truth didn't quite stretch far enough to stop
her persuading a voodoo priest to cast a spell preventing anyone saying
anything bad about her.

Load of mumbo jumbo if you ask me - but I must say Mel is a fantastic
presenter and if she sticks at it I reckon she'll become a huge star on
television. She's just so lovely. And really clever with it...

Anyway, my favourite part of her journey came later when another medicine
man offered her a bag of white powder with the words:

"Anywhere you pass and you have this powder with you, everyone will love
you."

See Mel, voodoo's not that different to showbiz really.
