Chris Cutler is a legend in the art rock world who has worked with
such greats as Henry Cow, Art Bears, Pere Ubu, The Residents and Fred
Frith, and now he plays the Sedgwick on Sunday, March 23, at 7:30 PM.
Cutler will play a solo show as part of his current national tour,
which stops in dozens of cities, from Detroit to Miami. In total, he
has appeared on more than 100 recordings, including many important
works in their respective genres. He is known for his electrified drum
kit, which he has developed himself over the last 25 years, and use of
found objects, toys, and acoustic electric machines to create "an
almost orchestral array of sounds."
At the start of the seventies, with Dave Stewart, he co-founded The
Ottawa Music Co, a 22-piece Rock composer's orchestra, and eventually
joined British experimental group Henry Cow. He has been a member of
dozens of ensembles and bands from Japan to Romania, a record label
founder, and magazine editor. Nothing short of a musical "Renaissance
Man," Chris Cutler is also known for his philosophical lectures and
writings on music, which have been published in 15 languages.
Says Cutler, "It still feels to me as if I am not so much trying to
make the instrument do what I want it to do as to discover what it
wants - and then argue with it in public. That's certainly what
convinced me finally to start doing solo performances." On playing
solo, as he will be at this concert, Cutler writes, "Like Dr.
Johnson's prospect of being hung at dawn, a solo concert wonderfully
focuses the mind."
