From what I've read, he changed Maher to Marr because there was
already a local band member with the same name.
So is it just coincidence that the french phrase "J'en ai marre"
pronounced virtually the same as Johnny Marr means "I'm bored"?

When the Smiths formed, Johnny Maher was also the drummer for local group
The Buzzcocks, so the guitarist changed his name. It might also be no
coincidence that J'en ai marre, pronounced Johnny Marr, is french for
"I'm fed up".
I have this weird feeling of deja vu...

Johnny Maher really was Johnny's real name (though I suppose it could
have been a joke on his parents' part). It is pronouned to rhyme with layer.
There is a drummer called Johnny Maher, hence the name change.

Maher is a common Irish surname. It is pronounced Marr, not to rhyme with
layer. I don't know any more about why he changed it, but I will say that I
pretty sure it wasn't a joke on his parents part....
