Anyone got a front runner for album of the year yet?

For me it's

Alcest-Les Voyages De Lame,

with nothing remotely close.

Officially I see where Best Buy is announcing the closing of some 52
stores. Seeing how they just opened one here about 2 years ago, I
doubt we will be losing it, but if we do, then I guess that is that.

Which would leave only the 2 Wal-Marts and a Super K-Mart as places
with any number of new CD's in stock to buy. Excepting of course the
one local record shop in town.

This is like when Dr Who travels to the end of Earth's days when the
Sun is about to go supernova.

Where is TJ? Is he on Facebook?

Just opening one means nothing. A Kmart opened in my friends
neighborhood and when they restructured they closed it down after it
only being there a year.

That is true, put it this way, you wouldn't think they'd close the
new store that quickly, but I stand to be corrected if they do
actually close it.
Of course, I don't know if you remember Electric Avenue and More (a
Montgomery Ward electronics store, a lot like a Best Buy in many
ways), but they opened one in town, ironically in the building that
had been a K-Mart, only to close it not even a year later when
Montgomery Ward went bankrupt.
The local Kmart used to be a Supercenter with a full grocery
section, no they've walled off that section of the store and it's no
longer a Super K. I think there will be more restructuring for Kmart

Here in the D.C. area, the competition for selling CDs is between Best
Buy, KMart, WalMart, Target, FYE, Barnes & Noble, with the Costco and
BJ's Wholesale Clubs offering a little selection. There are a few
standlone record/CD stores but they are few in number.
With Best Buy, not my fault that their Geek Squad seems to be made
up of people who have more accidents than the Three Stooges and Chevy
Chase.
One major annoying thing with today's kids is that to me, they don't
treat CDs and DVDs with care. For example, I have a Defenders of the
Faith CD that I bought in 1987 or 1988 that still sounds as great as
the day I bought it.

I have CD's with nary a scratch after 25 years of owning them.

As for the sound, so long as it does not have disc rot, the sound
will always be the same. As far as I know. Now to my hearing, I am
sure it's not as good as it was 25 years ago.

Tom

CD's aren't beer coasters, hockey pucks or clay pigeons.

TJ is on Facebook, check my friends list. Interestingly I bought a vinyl album of Dr Who sound effects today, it was one of the Record Store Day releases. I also picked up 7" soundtrack vinyl's for The Wicker Man, and Satanic Rites of Dracula/ Dracula A.D. 1972.

So today was record store day.

I went by the local shop. I looked around for a while. No big lines
as DC said he saw where he went.

I bought Starless and Bible Black.

There was a group of 18-20 year old guys, who bought a bunch of used
vinyl albums. They spent about $11 each, and walked out with a good
sized stack of albums. The local shop has always had a large amount of
vinyl new and used, although now most of their collection is used.

Alcest is moving up towards the top of my favorite bands at the
moment. Maybe in 6 months to a year or more, a more accurate placing
may happen. Although right now I am digging them about as much as any
band.

Sign of the times? I was looking to buy a couple albums on Amazon,
and there is a choice. Two Alcest albums. I don't know if you'd like
them, but one is a pricey import on CD which costs $36 and change. The
other album is a digipac that costs $14.99 I believe. Right there is a
choice to buy the albums on mp-3 format. No DRM, 256 bit rate, so only
good ears could tell a difference. (these sound better than some CD's
I have, so I probably could never tell a difference.
Anyway, I could buy the full albums for $5.34 each.
So, I just made my first paid mp-3 downloads. Resisted the dark side
for so long. Always was a physical copy type guy. I do see where a lot
of albums are being offered on Amazon the same way. The CD is several
dollars more.
I have seen my nephew get CD's as birthday or Christmas presents,
only to go straight to his computer and rip them into mp-3's. I figure
most people do this now.
So it's real easy to just ask why bother with the CD?
When, the mp-3 is downloaded right away, and you can be listening to
it within seconds of clicking buy.
You don't have to rip it to mp-3 for your devices.
You don't have to wait days for shipping.
You also don't have to deal with a staff worker at a record store
giving you attitude because he's/she's never heard of said band, and
it's not in stock, so they'd have to play around with ordering it, and
waiting until their shipment to come in, only to find out that then,
the suppliers didn't have the CD, so you have to wait again.
Amazon also offers unlimited cloud storage of anything you buy
from them. So if your device craps out, you can always go back and re-
download it. Although they did say some products may be discontinued
without warning, so I guess it's possible that something you have on
storage could be removed. Not sure how that will work.

Tom

Probably won't be a physical copy guy much longer, I don't suspect.
I'd probably be ripping my whole collection if I had the hard drive
storage, and be done with carrying around CD's.

Usually when I buy a CD, I put it in my car's CD player for a listen
on the way home. I have ripped some before listening to a note,
though.

eh, rough on the CD? I have noticed if you eject on mine and don't
pull the CD out, it can get ejected the rest of the way.
As for standard playing, it doesn't seem to be rough at all.

However, with what you have, I guess it's not needed (CD player). I
guess they probably make car stereo's that accept those Micro-SD type
cards. If so, and you've got 16 GB ones, those will hold a ton of
music.

Tom

The day of cheap and almost unlimited storage is upon us.

Maybe the next vehicle I get will have that.

When are we supposed to get those "flying cars" that people used to
say would be a "everyman's type thing" come the year 2000, back in the
70's they used to say that.

Make mine a Mustang with wings, please.

Played today..

Demiricous-One. Yeah, sort of redundant band. Hardcore type vocals,
over almost all the Slayer riffs you remember.
I did sort of dislike this a lot back when I first heard it. I didn't
hate it today, but still feel like it's totally redundant.

Deicide-The Stench of Redemption. Who says redemption has to stink?
Deicide does. Anyway, been quite some time since I last listened to
it. Probably be quite some time before I listen to it again.

Then for a couple classics.

Jimi Hendrix-Kiss The Sky. And older CD, I believe some of it was at
the time previously unreleased. But it's been so long since it was
released (1983-1984 for the CD.) Some great stuff, though.

King Crimson-Starless and Bible Black. Digging this album. Probably
going to get more from them soon. While at the music shop, they pulled
their copy (vinyl) of the live album USA (I believe the title is) for
me to look at, and played their vinyl copy of Red. Which starts with a
pretty thick instrumental.

Ordered.

Camel's Debut. From 1973 I believe. Akerfelt has talked of his love
for this band for as long as I can remember. Figured it was about time
to hear it from the camel's mouth. So to speak.

Masterplan-Debut. Out of print for years, and only for sale at
extremely high prices for used copies. Now re-issued. Not sure if it's
been remastered or not.

Arrived.

There is a bonus live song on the Camel debut that is 19 minutes long.
If you're giving the fans a bonus track, I guess this is about as good
a way to do it as any. The album is quite good.

On Masterplan, now that I read the Amazon details of the album, they
say it's a new limited Edition that is supposed to have a 2nd CD or
maybe it's a DVD. Anyway, the CD I got was just the one CD. So
disappointed there.
But the album is quite good, so, I guess I can take the lumps for not
getting a 2nd disc.
