everyone in WC talks about some scene or something, but there's no scene
there... having a scene constitutes having good bands (we have 2), and people
who go to shows because of the music, not to show off their new jnco's with the
checkers on the side or to sit in front of the YWCA and smoke cigarettes and
talk shit on everyone...
ive been to alot of west chester shows and the whole scene sucks poop.

no one forces you to come to shows, no one asks you to be a "part" of the scene
you go to shows because you
1) like the music, you just might have a different taste in music as other
people cuz i can think of 5 bands right off the top of my head(it's almost 2 in
the morning..so there's not much on the top of my head) that i'd travel pretty
far to see.
2) like the people

if you dont, then dont come...people have fun at shows here...if not, then
they're stupid for wasting their time there
you're just being a hippocrit now by talking shit on people where they can't
see it

so maybe the scenes not as big as it is in some huge towns, even if there are
only like 10 people who love the music and each other, then fine, but let those
10 people be as happy as they want..no one asked your opinion, especially since
no one knows you and has any idea who you are

if i could change one thing about this scene...i would want the bands to get
along better....but besides that everythings going well

i dont know though i might be completely talking out of my ass..it's late.

I would want them to GET better. Scenes are real dull with a bunch of
friends playing bad music together. Its much more interesting when really
good bands get in fist fights.

whats your definition of good? getting signed? having lots of fans? getting a
reaction from crowds?
i'm not sure what better judges how good a band is then how much people enjoy
it
and people enjoy the bands here....and one of them got picked up by a label..so
obviously someone out of town thinks they kick ass..

I remember a post a while ago where I answered this question. Im not going
to go into the same detail I did before, but I define (and I think its a
good definition) of *good* music as ample parts of the following:

musical talent (you gotta have da skills!)
originality (covers are boring)
musical intelligence (kenny g gots skills, but his music is mundane and
boring)
creativity (avoid beating the dead horse)

Now you don't have to have all of these things, if you've got buckets and
buckets of the other three. If you want to to list bands for analysis (wow,
I think way too much about this) , I will be happy to give my breakdown of a
band/songwriters scores in the above categories.

Money and getting signed and having a good crowd response has NOTHING to do
with good music. Thats more showmanship. A totally different thing. As
for getting signed, that in no way means the lable thinks they are good.
What that means is that the lable thinks that this particular band appeals
to its target audience and can turn over a profit. Its all business when
you get down to it.

Im going to maine for a week, so don't expect a speedy response

well now the horse has been beaten pretty heavily in the genre in most places
anyway, but i can't just but in a cd, and then listen to a local band and be

special about them..i'd go through and name them all, but i know i'd leave

uh, i'll beg to differ on that one, especially because i'm the label that
signed the band in question....

1) i don't make shit off anything i do labelwise.
2) i don't do it for the money.
3) i signed the band because i like their music and i think other people
would
too if they were able to get their music out. YES, i think the band is
great.
4) there are labels that aren't "all business."
5) that's why i'm probaby going to do a record with you band, sean.
6) that above formula might work for big, major labels, but not in this league.

any more questions?

Well, that's the way many major labels work, however most DIY labels are not in it for the profit. They release the music because they LIKE the music not about what will make the biggest profits..I think the band being talked about is The Antix, and being signed to Jump Start! and from what i know about Jump Start, I would highly doubt that they signed the Antix in order to make huge profits, most likely because they like the music.

Actually I don't believe any band was being discussed and singled out. I
think Sean was generalizing.

If people like the Antix..fine with me but i personally cannot stand them..not
just because I don't like their music but because I also do not appreciate the
attitude that some of their members have. There are lots of bands whose music
I may not like, but if they are considerate and don't come off as assholes all
the time, i will support them. For examle, Space Ate Mafia does not always
make my ears happy, but they were really easy going, nice guys at Sean's shows,
never gave Sean a problem, (and shared their donuts with me). Therefore, I am
going to have a lot more respect for them, and give them a higher
recommendation. I think how you handle yourself also means a lot.

I really like Dr. Fever. I think 5 Point O is really good too.
I went to that back to skool bash and the bands that stood out were Dr.
Fever, The Antix, Shrimp Skampi and the Skallops (due to their age).
And I was surprised at how good the N.C. Thirteens and 5 Point O were,
although I wasn't in much of a ska/punk mood that day. But The Antix
blew my top off! That shows you how much I like The Antix!
Oh, and The Ska Blazers and the Upstanders (one of the brightest bands
around, although I haven't seen them lately) were obviously better than
the bands I mentioned, even if it's just the experience.

But anyway, Dr. Fever ! I got their "It's Go Time" tape, and the
recording quality really just isn't there, although I really like the
songs and think the band has a bright future if they concentrate on it.
Hopefully the new recording sounds better and has more than 1 horn
(although I hear their first CD had no horns whatsoever!)

Wow, I know this post is really unorganized and pretty dumb, but I'm
tired and stuff. I think I'm going to get back into reading and posting
on a.m.s. Maybe. It's been years.

Well here it goes...

I play in Lucky#7, as I'm sure many of you are aware. I'm sure lots of people
hate Lucky#7's music. But I don't really have a problem with that.

In my eyes, the West Chester "scene", as many people call it, is suffering.
Not suffering because there are bands from that area that may not be as tight
as everyone would like them, or don't play the right styles, but because the
same music has been played there for the past year. No one new ever comes to
West Chester, and it kinda gets boring seeing the same bands playing the smae
music over and over...

I started the Bland Entertainment DIY promoter, with help from Andrew, in an
attempt to bring the scene a breath of fresh air...I think that EST will be a
great thing to show West Chester...I think they're absolutely amazing, and I
think the West Chester scene will too.

At least, hopefully, from now on there will be some more diverse music in West
Chester.

And to all the people who don't like 5point0, who don't like the Antix, who
don't like Lucky#7, and so on .... It's really ok, and nobody should give you
shit because of that. There's alot of bands that I really dislike...

If the "scene" is gonna survive, than I think that we need some support to do
so...

You can start by coming the the EST show on Friday, the 14th...if we're gonna
make this last we need lots of help for shows like this...

Cheers,
Matt Halley

Not to dig the nail any farther, and no offence to Jack. I like the band too,
but the attitude of the band members do kinda shy me way.. i had a chat with
jack and i know they totally do not want to be seen that way. I thought i was
the only one who thought this way about the band till i heard from some other
friends.. and now from you.

Oh well it's not their fualt they are good guys.. but they do gotta work on

This reminds me of a short , but sad story.

The first local show i been to was i think the 29th of june of last year. The
only reason i went is cuz the huntingtons asked me to and were playing. The
show was 5 dollars (a whole dollar er two cheaper than today). So I walk up
to the door, by myself.. peak in spot the huntingtons and tell that dude I
was with em.. so i didn't have to pay :).

The show was sweet.. i was like homesick..er osmthing.. throughout the whole
show.. so i sat down throughout most of it. Then when dr feaver came on.. man
they fuckin rocked.. even when they played that unity cover with 5point0.. .

Now, all i had was 5 dollars on me.. and the dr feaver cd was 5 dollars.. But
something.. like an evil demon came over me and possesed me not to buy the
cd.. and i walked out the church.. with out the dr fever cd.

Till this fuckinday.. i can not find that cd.. every time i see dr feaver..
which was 3 more times since that first time. (or 4? you lose count so
easily). they either ran out or the dont have it. Coincidently every time
after that show drfever.. well they weren't as good, at least through my
eyes.

I got the other cd the one with the ceral on it.. with out horns. Its not the
best but its allryt.

Thats my story bout drfever.. I have ones about wormbath, upstanders (truely
delightful and touches the heart and soul), 5point0, space ate the
mafia, antix, lucky #7 , huntingtons , and many many others. Feel free to
request one.

I want to hear the one about space ate the mafia. YEAH...ROCK! I wish I could
be in space ate the mafia....because....then I'd be a rock star that loves Motley
Crue. HOO AHH (a la Al Pachino). In any case, I want to hear that story. While
we're on the subject of stories....you might as well tell the rest of them. I'll
eventually give the same speech about the rest of the bands....with more HOO
AHH's.

Oh, BTW, we're Space aTe Mafia....but don't worry, I've heard worst, like Space
Age Mafia (common, we might as well rename ourselves), Space Ate Mofia (in two
separate instances...weird), and Space 8 Mafia (not so bad). Actually, I like
Space ate the mafia, it actually makes some sense. Let's ponder this, what if
space actually ate the mafia? What would all the ethnic groups do for fun? What
would happen to all of the Godfather movies? Would it be like the Nothing from
the Neverending Story? I need answers people....ANSWERS. I'm done with my brain

Mwahahahaha!!!!!!!! He is now a member of the Rathskeller religious cult.
He just moved here from N. Carolina. I never saw him before then, but he
came up to Tedford and was like "hey, I play sax, can I audition". He

Hells yeah I do! Come on, how band can it be? I've heard so many personal attacks
to us already, just throw some more gasoline on the fire. I mean, everyone out
there should read our guestbook and see what kind of crazy sons of bitches are out
there. Ask Sean, he ventured into our guestbook once. I think you can blast us

if my assumption is right, and what you have to say is bad. Either way, I still
want to hear that story cause it makes me feel important.
