LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ::::::::::::::#
######################################
Hello again!!!
Sorry for the BIG delay in getting out this issue. My job and school
had to take a front seat to SKA this past month and a half. Hopefully
I can get back on a decent SKA schedule.
Check out all the show reviews......
Since the last issue I have seen way to many bands/shows to write about.
I attended a last minute sunday night show that the SKATALITES put on
at a small Jamaican Restraunt/Bar here in Madison. For all 20 of us it
was way cool. Definetly a once in a lifetime experience.
This issue is dedicated to Lucy Drummond.....my new Vespa '63 150 scooter.
Since I have joined the ranks of the scooter riders...I would love to have
everyone send in Scooter info along with the SKA stuff.

Joel,
I've heard that the Busters are coming out with a new album and I was
wondering if it would be run out of MOON REX. I had trouble getting their
German imports, so if it's coming here from across the seas, do you have an
address where I can reach em at? Is it the same one they give on their
other albums (Couch Potatoes, Ruder Than Rude)?
I also wanted to thank you for the ol Monkey Man copy--It was the only
interesting thing I've heard in a long, long time. Actually, the toasters
came to play here recently, but it wasn't a university-run concert. It
took place at a frat and I, not being one close to the Greek circle, never
heard a word til afterwards. Oh well, so much for the review I could've
given you, but believe me, I'm sorry for both of us. Later.

THE SKATALITES on the road again
######################################
Skatalites at the House of Blues, N.O. Lousiana, March 25.
An incredible band puts on incredible shows. The House of Blues is
Dan Akroyd's place down in the French Quarter and it is a magnificent
place for this type of show. After driving over a 1000 miles to see this
show I was not disappointed by the band or the club. We hung out early
before the show so we could talk to MU-330 who was opening and get
on their guest list. They were happy to see us and once again (for probably
around the 12th time) I was happy to hear them play. Their set was shorter
then it usually is, but it was understandable with the band that was waiting
to take the stage. At first we were sort of disappointed by the crowd that
was coming in. It was a lot of old fat white people who really didn't take
an interest in the band. Eventually we hooked up with the skins which made
the evening much more enjoyable. They have their own ska band called
Kelly's Heros and will be on the upcoming Moon Records comp. When the
Skatalites were preparing to take the stage, everyone on the dance floor
at least had a clue as to what they were about to witness. Before the show
we talked with Lloyd Knibb and Roland Alphonso. They told us the set was
going to be some new stuff but filled with a lot of the old songs. That got
us excited. They opened the set with their "song of freedom." Tommy seemed
upset with the sound through most of the show and he was being pretty harsh
with the soundman and the members of his band. All the songs were marvelous
and seeing Roland and Tommy playing those solos was something else. The
two and a half hour set included tunes from the ska, rocksteady, and reagge
periods. Tommy narrated between songs and explain the history behind each
song and the years which they were written. Highlights of the set included
Guns of Navarone (of course), El Pussy Cat, and Confucious. All the songs
they did in memory of Don Drummond seemed to get the best response from the
crowd. I don't have enough good things to say about this band. They started
it all and I will drive 1000 miles to see them again if I have to.

Skatalites in Atlanta, GA
March 26, 1994
The Skatalites/MU330 tour ended with a bang, or rather a BLAZE as a fire
broke out at their last venue, the Masquerade, Atlanta, GA. The fire
started long after the show had ended but the Skatalites were still in
the building. Sources say the fire started in the dressing room of
Magadog, the opening band.
Opening band, Magadog, seemed to be having an off night, but, having
never seen them before, I don't know if this was their usual. But the
crowd didn't seem to care and thus throughout their mediocre set there
was always a dancing frenzie. There must have been a number of their
groupies present.
MU330, by contrast, was tighter, faster and far more talented. At least
MU330's horn section possessed the ability to go beyond the same
repetitious chord progression that Magadog seemed content to play over
and over. But the audience was unresponsive to MU330. I couldn't figure
it out. The lesser band gets all the applause, the better band none. As
best as I could figure it was due to the fact that the audience seemed
more familiar with Magadog's material. The local college radio ska show
DJ's have been playing a lot of Magadog's songs. And too, it could have
been that the audience wasn't open to the harder, faster, or as my
companion put it, "more macho" crossover sound of MU330. Maybe MU330
wasn't "pure" enough for this audience.
I spoke to the lead singer of MU330 after his set and asked him about
their previous engagement in New Orleans. He said the crowd in N.O. was
about 20 years older than the Atlanta crowd. I told him this audience
seemed to be a real dud, adding that their set was far better than could
be judged by the audience's response. "Well, it doesn't matter 'cause we
had a lot of fun playing" he answered. Great attitude.
The Skatalites came on and obviously that was what the audience had been
waiting for. A little note about the Masquerade. It is a bar with 3
levels, Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. Unfortunately the disco is
downstairs from the level where bands play and the noise can be quite
distracting. The bass player for the Skatalites kindly asked that the
noise from the disco be turned down before they started their set. They
were momentarily obliged but the sound level from downstairs went back up
2 songs into their set.
Nonetheless the Skatalites proceeded to put on an excellent show and the
audience was most responsive! The Skatalites showed everyone how it's
really done.
P.S. I sampled a delicious taste of a new radio show, SKAFEAST, on WRAS,
Georgia State University's station only to be told that it was a special
treat and not a regularly scheduled show. If you're in the Atlanta area

hello Joel
I just got my copy of Monkey Man today which also is my second ever
E-mail. Needless to say I'm new to this info superhighway stuff. Very
enlightening. First, would you please send me any back issues of monkey man
so that I can climatize myself to what's been happening in the states in
Ska. Your intro to MM asked for some personel information so that you shall
have. I'm from Toronto in Canada. I've been a ska fanatic for some 14 years
now. I first got hooked in the hay days of the 2-tone bands and quickly
began tracing the music. I worked in a pub in London in 1983-84
collected records, and checked out the scene as it was then. For the past
five years I've been playing in ska bands. I helped found one of Toronto's
two big ska bands, Skaface, the other being King Apperatus. Skaface has
released a full length CD as well as two EPs. I left Skaface to found a big
band ska outfit about a year ago. We're currently recording and hope to
have a cassette and/or CD out within a few months. This project is called
the SKANKSTERS. We have ten members and play a whole range of styles from
traditional Skatelites style covers to 2-tone style stuff, skalypso, ska and
B and spunk (our own brand of ska-punk). Actually if you would be good
enough to pass on my E-mail address in MM and a mention of these bands any
interested people could contact me directly and that'd be a hoot. I'm Paul
(Woof) Stewart at in%"mste...@oise.on.ca".
I saw the Skatelites show in Toronto while they were on there big tour
with the Special Beat, Selecter and the Toasters. I've already gabbed on
enough so I won't bother talking bands or shows. I've played with or opened
for the likes of the busters, bad manners, laurel aiken, the selecter, the
toasters, the potato five, bim skala bim, mighty mighty bosstones and
others and i've had long chats with buster bloodvessel, laurel aiken and
members of the Skatelites so if I get going I'll bore you silly. If you'd
like anecdotes, reviews, history of ska or bands or anything else just drop
me a line. Congratulations on your great effort. It's a real pleasure to
connect with other people interested in ska. MM is fantastic. I wish I'd
found it sooner.

Skastafarians review...
I got a hold of a pre-release tape by the Dallas-based Skastafarians the
other day. For those of you not familiar with this, (gasp!), SOUTHERN ska
band, they are a seven piece band made up of students at SMU. Their music
ranges from classic two-tone style to ska-core stuff.
The tape begins with one of the band's favorites- Kiss and Kill, which has
one of the greatest (and freshest) horn lines I've heard in a long time. Track
3, Bright Green Eyes, is one of my favorites. Its simplistic lyrics detract
from the great crunching chorus, but the song is very catchy, nonetheless.
Track 6, My Misfortunate Fortune, is another highlight. It's light and poppy,
with a jangly guitar sound that just makes you want to get up and dance. The
last song on the album is a cover of Alsatian Cousin by Morrissey, and they do
a very good job of translating Mr. Depression's song into something enjoyable.
The band's strength is in their great horn lines, and their ability to
write very catchy songs! Plus, they're entertaining to watch perform live as
well. The lead singer is from Australia and has a very thick accent, which can
itself be entertaining at times. To top it all off, they're all really nice
guys (I interviewed the band last year for the school paper).
The album is will be released on Trenchmouth records some time soon, I
don't know when. Stay Tuned...
also, Joel, thanks for listing my ska radio show in your radio listings. I did
my first show Tuesday night, and I really need more material if I'm going to
keep up an hour show (13 CD's doesn't really cut it...). If you or your
readers could help me come up with a good name for my show, I would really
appreciate it as well...
Thanks, and keep up the good work, because I know you must get tired of doing
all that work, but be assured that all your work is not in vain...
Thanks again,

YOUR LOCAL SCENE:::::::::::::::::::::#
######################################
THE CANADIAN SCENE
From: MSTE...@oise.on.ca
You asked for some more info on the Canadian Ska scene so here is a
little. Before I start a reminder to send back issues of MM please. I've
only got your most recent and would love to peruse the past.
Ska has been kicking around Canada as long as there's been a Jamaican
community here ie the late 1950's. I know because I bought an old single of
monty morris' and Oh Carolina by the Folks brothers both from the late
1950's and both were printed(I mean witha business stamp) by a Toronto record s
tore.Toronto has a pretty huge West Indian community and has had for years.
Many music greats have lived or still do in Canada, particularly Toronto
and Montreal. Performers like Jackie Mitoo, Starnger Cole, Leroy Sibbles,
John Folks, Jo Jo Bennet, Lord Tanamo and many others live in Toronto (
Jackie Mitoo regretably now having passed on). Ernie Smith was recording in
Toronto for many years before returing to Jamaica. There were a number of
sound systems operating in Toronto during the Ska years but unfortunately
I don't know much about this time so I can't pass on any system names. I'm
also sorry to say that I don't know anything much about the history of Ska
in other Canadian cities. The
earliest I am personally aware of was the 2-tone invasion. It was as short
lived here as it was in the US I'm sure. After the death of 2-tone ska in
the UK not much happened here, but then not much happened anywhere. The
first ska rebirth band I can recall was Vancouver's Villains. They released
a very rude hard skankin' EP that generated much cult fame. It's a great
record. Get it if you can. They followed it up with a very lame full length
record that flopped and sealed their fate. The guitarist for the Villains
created a new ska oriented band called Skaboom. It is now a pretty woosie
please everybody cop out band. It was a fairly good 5or 6 piece with wild
organ and horn. The other spin off of sorts from the Villains was the Rude
Boys. It was actually an ex member of the Villains who took all their money
and ran to Toronto. They were the altimate 2-tone tribute band. Damn fine
but very short lived. These previously mentioned bands all appeared around
the 1982-83 mark. Around this time there were also ska nights happening at
some of Toronto, Montrael and Vancouver's alternative night clubs but I
swear you could count Toronto's rude boys and girls on a couple of
hands.there was also a band called BGM or some such name. They opperated
out of Windsor Ontario but I don't know anything about them except that a
couple of their members are now in a Toronto band called One. This band
plays some ska but mostly pop reggae.
After the demise of these bands not much happened for a number of years.
Finally in 1985 or so Bad Manners arrived and kick started the careers of
local rock skaers the Hopping Penguins. They've since gone on the play
every musical style in the book. Still a little ska but not much. This was
the dry condition of ska when in 1989 I answered an ad about the formation
of Toronto's then only ska band. Response was so poor that it took several
monthes before we could actually play. Fact is I was only interested in the
music I couldn't sing or play any instrument. I quickly got a guitar and
offered my services as a rhythm player. What can I say they were desperate
and so Skaface was born. at about this time another band arrived in Toronto
(actually about one week later) and the rivalry for skankin' supremacy was
on. They were and are King Apperatus who I'm sure you've heard of. Skaface
is also still on the scene and recording but without me. I left one and a
half years ago because it was eating too much of my time. King Apperatus play
the new breed of rock-2 tone-ska. Skaface played 2-tone style ska but have
trimmed down to a five piece and now play
harder rockier ska. My current project is called the Skanksters. We've made
a base of old style ska playing and we play around with a soca-ska number
here a 2-tone piece there, alittle soul-ska, some rock steady and a couple
of reggae numbers. My main goal is to play the original style with all of
it's subtlties first and then move on to creat a distinctive Skankster
sound. By the way we're a ten piece which gives plenty of scope for
intricate arrangements. I can act as a contact for both the SKANKSTERS and
SKaface. I'm at Paul Stewart
36 Columbus Ave.
Toronto, Ontario
M6R 1S2
Canada
The other truely ska band in Toronto is called the Arsenals. They play
a mix of 2-tone style ska and heavy DJ rap ska party music. The Hopping
Penguins and a band called Adrian Miller both play some ska in their sets
but are more eclectic.
The other Canadian ska bands that I know about are Monteal's Me Mom
and Morgan Tayler ,or so I'm told. as far as I know they're still Me Mom and
Morgentaler in Canada ( if you'd like I'll tell you the story behind that
name some time). Montreal also is home to the Mobsters a two-tone type
outfit. Out west there is Roots Roundup and Skaboom and out east are
Preasure drop.I know there are bands lurking around Canada that I've
forgotten and I've missed masses of history and this is all very Toronto
centred but hopfully someone else will fill in some details . That's all I
can think of at the moment. Hope you can use this. Bye for now

Bowler Boys (Ska in Austin)
Thanks for sending me issue 10 of Monkey Man and for including the
message I sent you regarding Bowler Boys status.
I have an update. I think I sent you this information already, but my
address has changed. I now receive mail at sf...@tenet.edu I was told
by administrators at Wixar (my last service), that mail to my old address
would automatically be forwarded to my new address. This was not true.
Any mail sent to that address in the last few months should be
considered a dead letter. I apologize for any problems this may have
caused and look forward to hearing from you (or anyone else in the SKA scene)
anytime.
We will be playing April shows in Houston on the 2nd, Fort Worth on the
16th, Austin on the 20th, and San Antonio on the 23. We will also be
playing May 1st in Austin (Antone's), and May 13th in Dallas.
Our recent shows in Corpus Christi and Austin have been a great success!
Corpus hosted us on February 11th (w/ Slug Bug, Festus, Wrong Crowd, and
Crayons opening), and our March 29th show in Austin (opening for Dread
Zeppelin) was a blast. We are now working with a new drummer (John
Chipman) who we are quite pleased with. He keeps the beat driving and
the audience really appreciates his fresh style.
The long-awaited first tape from the BB's has arrived in local stores.
It's a five song cassette titled "Word, Sound, Power." Anyone interested
in a copy of it or one of our brand new T-Shirts can contact me through
E-Mail. The tapes are $6 and the shirts are $11 (postage paid for both).
A friend of ours (Hope) said she would review the tape and send it up to
y'all pretty soon.
That's about it. Thanks for everything. If there's anyone who wants to
contact us about shows or merchandise, or to get on our mailing list, you
can either contact me through E-Mail (sf...@tenet.edu) or SnalMail me at

SHOW REVIEW -- GANGSTER FUN W/ THE IMPATIENTS
THE BLIND PIG, ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN 3/25/94
Well, it was a chilly night in Ann Arbor, but not too cold for Gangster Fun
to pack the Blind Pig on a Friday night. They've been playing quite a bit
here lately, with more people showing up each time. The crowd was a mix
of rudies, some moshers, and some of your average friday-night bar goers.
First up was The Impatients. I can't be too objective here, 'cause I'm
in the band. We're more of a pop band than ska (a la Big Star, Marshall
Crenshaw, Elvis C, and, well, the English Beat). We had a good time,
though. I don't know if the die-hard rudies were into it as much, but
there were a lot of people dancing/skanking. We even played a ska tune
from my old band, the Goon Skwad.
Gangster Fun then came out after a half-hour break. At this point, the
dance floor was packed, and they weren't letting any more people in. There
was a lot of moshing happening, but there was room toward the edges for
people to skank in peace. Basically, it was a great show. The band had
a ton of energy, probably due to the responsive crowd. A guy in the band
said after the show they usually had their best shows here.
Anyway, G-Fun ripped through 20 or so tunes... most of the songs from their
newer "Time Flies..." album, and some tunes from their first album, which
I've looked for but haven't been able to find. And they seem to have a
thing for 70's AOR rock covers, ska'd up so that they almost sound like
original ska tunes. The did Kiss' "I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night" and
an early ZZ Top song that I forget the name of, and also "We're an
American Band", by Grand Funk, I think. Pretty funny, actually.
The only downside, in my opinion, was that the horns were mixed way too
low. You could barely hear them. And they didn't have their trumpet
player tonight, which didn't help, just sax and 'bone. Also, they have
a new guy playing bass, he was pretty good. The thing that really
makes their live shows, though, is their singer. He's got as good
a stage presence as anyone, & he loves to act goofy as well. He reminds
me a little of Angelo Moore of Fishbone, although his voice isn't quite
as good as Angelo's. The band as a whole has gotten tighter over the years,
too. I first saw them back in 1990 at a (jock) bar called Rick's, in front
of about 12 people, & they were pretty sloppy, but still fun. (Geez,
they've been around awhile!)
Anyway, see 'em if you get the chance!

The GO-STEADIES
From: mike.s...@index.com
SKA SKA SKA
Went and saw the GO-STEADIES do their CD recording with the SKATS and a few
others, the SKATS were not very good, they need time and the lead singer should
let the other singer (who is rude to the teeth) take front stage. They have a
lot of promise.
The Go-Steadies warm my heart though. I think the Singer needs a little dose
of reality and relaxation, but they were "filming" (16mm) the show and
recording (DAT) for future release on KINGTONE with the other bands. It was,
after all a great show and I'm glad to have been there.
the otherwise dead club --Somber Reptile--(they mostly book new Metal/ GA TECH
bands) was packed, the club didn't know what to do with the crowd. The age
seemed to hender things a bit (people left early and couldn't buy beer
[although cards (id) weren't being seen much--know what I mean] and beer pays
bills for a lot of clubs)
The Atlanta SKA scene is definetly there for the taking. A lot of people would
attend a SKA FEST if there was one, And I would help if anyone would like to

ALLSTONIANS AND TOASTERS
I just came back from seeing the Allstonians and the Toasters at the HAUNT,
a club in Ithaca, NY. I'd been hearing all this incredible praise for the
Allstonians so I was expecting a great show. Unfortunately I came away very
unimpressed with them. They had no life to them. The horns weren't tight.
It was kinda boring, I guess. They got better as the show went on, but I
was pretty upset with their whole set. I'm assuming that they probably had
an off-night, especially with all the good things I've been hearing. The
positive points of their set were "B train to Alston" and a cover of a
Skatalites song (I'm too tired right now to remember which one). They tried
a few rocksteady songs, and I don't think they quite had them down too well.
Oh well. Between sets the HAUNT tried to play the some compilation from
Moon Records (i have it somewhere, i'm not quite sure of the name...i think
it's NY BEAT-Hit and Run...or something like that). Anyway, it kept
skipping and for about 10 minutes the same two lines played over and over
and over and over and well you get the picture. Finally, Rob Hingly, who
was setting up, told the guys that he thought their record had a nice
scratch in it somewhere. Then the management made an announcement that no
moshing would be tolerated, and for a second I thought maybe there would be
a crowd of mainly skanking like the Steady Earnest show a week ago.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen. The first thing Cooly said when he came
out was "I hear there are some restrictions and stuff on dancing. I DON'T
THINK SO!" So that was that. Then everybody went crazy and the mosh pit
took up most of the floor. I tried to skank for a while. I even went into
the middle and started throwing my elbows high to ward off anyone else.
However, I'm not the biggest guy and after being thrown around a bit I gave
up. I ended up watching most of the show from the sidelines. Musically,
they were excellent and played some stuff from their soon to be released
album "dub 56" which sounded pretty good. If only the crowd had been a
little better it would have been great. Oh well. I did pick up a few new
CD's and I'll try and send you some reviews if I can find the time...
Toasters at the 9:30 DC
From: bartholomew%eagle....@detrick-emh1.army.mil (EAGLE::BARTHOLOMEW)
The show was great.
Two encores, no idiots, and a keyboard player for the Toasters. What
more could you ask for?
It was a mid-week show, so no hoards of drunken masses to piss me off and
make me want to hit people with blunt objects about the head and shoulders.
mu330 or musso, as the paper refered to them, were good, but perhaps, they
tried to ingratiate themselves to the crowd to much, the lead singers hat
was most excelent, a la jughead.
The Toasters, good solid show, some songs have sped up, lots of new songs
from the new album, and almost all the favorites, I would still like to hear
Rhaposdy in Bluebeat live, and I thought I would hear it, because they did
bring a keyboard player, but no. O well, when was the last time they
played Mr. Trouble?
Crowd notes, there was no stage diving, some pogo-ing, but they were moved :)
It is hard to come down in the same place if people give you a gentle push, and
you end up bouncing your way to the back of the crowd. I must say I haven't
seen such a great crowd in quite sometime.
As for the 9:30 club, get tickets before hand, no waiting in line, and you get
in.

Okay, fosr starters. I did my RADIO show yesterday, SKA-FEAST, (WRAS 88.5 FM)
and it was great!! We got a lot of really great feedback. I plan on doing
another soon, so bands are welcome to send tapes and or suggestions. I got a
lot of phone calls form people interested in making a Difference here in
SK-Alanta with regards to the SKA scene. A lot has been happening...
SKATALITES played here with MU-330 and MAGADOG.
the SKATALITES were the best. Their level of professionalism and showmanship
were outstanding. I can only say I was dissapointed in the turn out. COME ON
we know your out there!!
Next weekend there will be another chance to prove who you are...
King APPERATUS will be playing the MASQURADE with GO-Steadies (local).
don't miss out.
I'm making this short because it's late, but I just wanted to get the message
through that SKALANTA can really happen...
The show proved it... Write me if you'd like a tape of the show, or a play
list. ALL help is encouraged...
Thanks to those who helped and mostly...
THOSE THAT LISTENED... Write the station for more...

Hello Joel, my name is Angel and I recently took over Mike Cancilla's spot
as ska DJ here at KCPR San Luis Obispo, CA. I don't know how to post things
on the net so I am asking you to spread some news for me. The Toasters are
going to be in California in April--28th in San Francisco, 29th in Los Angeles,
and 30th in SaN Diego. Also, the Skatalites and Hepcat will be in Santa Barabar
on May 11 at the Red Dog. And in ska-related news, a local scooter club is
putting on a rally next month. It's called Rides of March, but in past years
it has always rained heavily so this year they are holding it the weekend of
April 15-17. Thanks a million!
