They aren't even remotely ska... but they're good. I like them. New album

Swing + **SKA**?!? Methinks you're mistaken. SNZ play Hot Jazz, not
swing and DEFINITELY not ska. They're good though.

I am a big fan of Squirrel Nut Zippers, since The Inevitable...
They have a great New Orleans style(not saying they're from there) with a lot
of swing, ragtime, dixieland, and latin influence.

Also, for incredible roots N.O. blues, check out singer J. Mathus's solo blues
project, and now out is another sorta spin off by Andrew Bird(I just bought it,
I forget if thats his name) featuring Mathus and his wife Kate Whalen.

I know a lot of people are going to say this, but here goes: the Squirrel
Nut Zippers have NOTHING to do with ska. I've heard three of their CDs, and
AT NO POINT ON ANY OF THEM DO THEY EVEN COME CLOSE TO PLAYING SKA. The
Squirrel Nut Zippers may play with ska bands, they may even play the same
instruments as ska bands, but the MUSIC they play is much, much closer to
swing or dixieland jazz than it is to ska.

Oh, and for the record I think they're very, very good. I saw them at the
Black Cat in DC a year or two ago, and it was one of the best live shows
I'd seen in a long time.

Morgan.

Also, Mathus used to be in an indie rock band called "Metal Flake Mother".
Ask young Aaron about them.

Okay, I finally listened to the new ANdrew Bird and the .... (Damn I left it at
my friend's house and forget again)

The CD is called Bowl of Fire(almost like the Skatalites new album)

>I've heard three of their CDs, and

Maybe this is the 3rd CD he talks of?? I dunno if Mathus's blues CD would seem
to be SNZ, neither would this, even if it is in the SNZ section of the store I
work in, but it only features 2 SNZ members on it.

Its incredible, however, much darker and Latin influenced than SNZ's albums,
with a great deal of violin and Vaudevillian singing on it, almost like the
"Pirate Swing" which I refer to Big Rude Jake as being.
BUY IT NOW!!!!

That's because they're a "trad" ska band.

no kim, the specials are not "trad", they're "old-skool".

They're *definitely* swing. They're more jazz than ska, and when I saw
them (after the Amazing Royal Crowns) they did a cover of Minnie the
Moucher... an old Cab Calloway hit... he's not ska, either.

Hmmm. I know that Squirrel Nut Zippers are NOT swing because they say so.
They are maybe Hot jazz, influenced by early 20th century American and Latin
musics, such as blues, dixieland, ragtime, jazz, and latino.

And thats odd that they would play Minnie the Moocher because I really cant
picture that if they were to do a cover. Especially since Royal Crown Revue
usually plays it, plus Big Bad Voodoo Daddy does it and also cause noone can
top Cab Calloway, there is no use trying

They're *definitely* HOT JAZZ. Of course they're more jazz than ska,
because they aren't ska AT ALL.

No shit Cab Calloway ain't ska.

a mooch is someone who mooches of other people. Perhaps you know someone like
this, he goes to your parties drinks your beer, smokes your pot, then steals
your girl.

Sorry, I guess I should have made my sarcasm more obvious. I know what
a moocher is, I was just commenting on the author's incorrect spelling
of it. I found it kind of funny that someone who's professing to know
so much about swing couldn't spell the song's title correctly.

The zippers are certainly hot jazz, not ska, the zippers trumpeter used to
be in an awesome ska band, though. The Pressure Boys, which put out some
great stuff in the mid/late 80's but broke up when it was abundantly clear
that 2-tone second wave was no longer a pop phenomenon. After that he was
in a white boy funk band... which broke up when they realized that Red Hot
Chili Peppers funk was not a pop phenomenon, and I guess the guy was just
biding his time in Chapel Hill in this hot jazz band when they suddenly
took off OUT OF NOWHERE!
Maybe Moon Ska will buy the rights to the awesome old pressure boys stuff...

I like the Squirril Nut Zippers becouse their approach to music is
similar to what I like about ska. They're also not like every 2nd band
on MTV (fakin' it to make it). It says a lot for American music culture
at this time that a band that sounds and looks like the SNZ can make
it. I think it's important to remember that ska was the result of
Jamaican bands mixing Latin Jazz, Swing, Big Band, and 50's pop. I
guess I feel like I should pay a certain amount of tribute to the
influences to that gave way to the genre of music that has been a big
influence on my life. Which by the way isn't hard becouse I like most
of it anyway.
Besides, the thought of hanging out with a fez on my head and a
martini in my hand, not giving a rat's behind about tomorrow is
appealing to me for some strange reason.
