=============== Boston Ska Emailing January 11, 2000 ===============
This weekend in Ska: Friday has a show at Cafe Eclipse in Concord NH with
T.I.P., Good For Life and more. On Saturday the Palladium in Worcester
has the all ages BoardFest with Kicked In The Head, Darkbuster, Sinners and
Saints, and many more. Also, in Killington, The Slackers start their
first of 2 days at Toadstool Harry's.
****SEE FULL LISTINGS BELOW AND ALWAYS CONFIRM SHOWS LOCALLY***

Well, got the Compaq computer back, seems to be working as long as you
don't believe that a laptop should actually be portable...

The show slated for next Sunday (Jan 21) at the Paradise is being billed as
The English Beat and a lot of people are really looking forward to seeing
it, including myself. I do feel that I should let people know that while
the band will be playing a lot of the English Beat catalog, the band itself
if by no means close in line up to the original Beat. As far as I can
tell, only Dave Wakeling will be representing from the original line up.
That doesn't mean it won't be good, as Dave did write a lot of the songs
and also sang quite a bit of them. I do know that Jonathan McCain (New
York Ska- Jazz Ensemble, X-Toasters) will be playing drums for this tour.
For those who want to go, last time I checked, there were a couple of
tickets still available through Next Ticketing
(http://www.nextticketing.com). I do have some tickets to give away to
this show (billed as 18+) so email be...@bostonska.com telling me which Beat
song is your favorite and why. Entries should be received by noon on
Wednesday, Jan 17. One entry per person. Include name, age, and email
address. I will notify winners Wednesday evening.

Also, Dave Wakeling will be interviewed on next week's WMBR's "Bovine Ska
Reality" which airs at Midnight on Tuesday, Jan 16th. The show is one of
Boston's best weekly ska and rocksteady show, and probably the only one
which focuses on the early roots and 60's ska, rock steady and reggae. You
can catch Gene and his show at 88.1FM in the Boston area or online at
http://www.wmbr.org so check it out. Gene will also have some tickets to
the show to give away so good luck to everyone.

Friday is the deadline to mail in applications for bands to be considered
for this year's NEMO conference. (Applications can be downloaded at
http://www.nemoboston.com and must be postmark by January 12th) The event
brings national attention (press and music industry people) to Boston for
the weekend event. In addition to the conferences, panels and other
highly educational (and a great networking opportunity) daytime events held
at the World Trade Center, NEMO organizes music showcases throughout Boston
and Cambridge, giving your band access to people who can really have an
impact on your career. One of the big perks about playing a showcase (in
addition to the visibility you'll receive) is that you will have access to
all of the panels, conferences, and discussion groups through out the
weekend. Major Plus: Face time with real industry executives! If your
band is serious about its career, this is worth doing.

Something I have been waiting to share with you for a couple of weeks. I
recently received an advance copy of the new Pressure Cooker cd and it
sounds amazing. They continue in their excellent rendition of new material
which evokes the passion, excitement, and beauty of the mid/late 60's
rocksteady and ska. I have been listening to it non-stop and am delighted
that they have included such live set staples as "Seven Years," "Sweeter
than Rain," "Spirits Will Carry You," the cool 践ip-Hip-Hip-Hurray' song
and several more. This is another one of those rare cases where the
sophomore cd meets or exceeds the excellent standards established by the
band's debut cd (see also Steady Earnest, Allstonians). The band has set
Friday, February 23 as its record release party at the Milky Way in Jamaica
Plain.

Coming from Canada is the latest In Stomp Records news. Montreal's The
Kingpins will be shooting a video for the track "Supernova" which is
expected to be submitted to Muchmusic and Musiqueplus by mid-February. The
Planet Smashers have begun pre-production for their upcoming record slated
for release in Mid- April. Mitch "king Kong" Girio of King Apparatus has
been hired as producer. You can expect to see a video for the first single
on the airwaves by late March. In more Planet Smashers news, the band has
recently been invited to play on the Sno Jam 7 tour beginning March 15th in
Vancouver, traveling across Canada.

Due to more problems with my adorable COMPAQ laptop, I will be sending it
in for repair, and thus there will be no update next week..... see you in
2K1 (If you want to read why COMPAQ sucks so bad, here is a true battle
with their computer at http://www.bostonska.com/misc/phuckcompaq.html)

Bim Skala Bim (http://www.bimska.com) and The Strangeways
(http://www.thestrangeways.com) will be doing 3 shows together in Florida
in January around the Tampa/Sarasota area. Thursday, January 11th has them
at the Five O'clock Club in Sarasota, Friday 1/12 brings them to the
University of South Florida in Tampa, then Saturday night (Jan 13) sees
them take on the Barbarella in Orlando. Bim will be taking some of
February and all of March off so your last chance to see them in the Boston
area is January 26 in Lawrence.

The Skatalites will be coming around to the area in February with shows at
the Middle East (a House of Blue production) on Feb 25. They will also
hit the Ocean Mist in Rhode Island the day before. They recently completed
a European tour and are looking forward to touring again.
