Ok, here's a challenge to you all. Someone asked me yesterday who the
biggest and best skinhead reggae bands are. I interpreted the question
to mean current bands, not Symarip et al. All I could really come up
with was the Rhythm Doctors and I'm not too sure they can be classified
as skinhead reggae, since I've only heard two of their songs. Sure,
there're bands that have one or two sr songs, but are there any bands
out there playing mostly or exclusively skinhead reggae?

Well, I've made the argument in the past that Engine 54 are skinhead
reggae, so I'd say they're pretty high up on the list...

I'm gonna dodge the question by saying that I don't think even
Symaripplayed "mostly or exclusively skinhead reggae". Obviously, they had
the image thing down despite having not one actual live skinhead in the
band. But I seem to remember them doing plenty of songs ("Stay with
him" and "Must catch a train", off the top of my head) that weren't
strictly inna skinhead style.

Morgan.

PS. I guess we should clarify what you mean by "skinhead reggae".
I think of it as being like rocksteady in instrumentation (lots of busy
guitar and organ, electric bass, and not much horns or piano) but
more driving and aggressive. I could definitely be off-base on this
one, though.

Who are you, Johnnie Cochran? E54 skinhead reggae? Oh, I don't think so.
One of two songs, perhaps.

("If they mention "jeggae" it's skinhead reggae?")

Which new album? I've got Run For the Money. Have you got advance tapes
of the next one or something? Their website hasn't been updated in a
jillion years, so I don't know if they're recording or not.

And as to seeing them live, all I can say is plfffphfhfffffttttt!

Deals gone bad, is the only I can think of that has not been mentioned. They
play some ska and rocksteady, but their new album I hear is a lot more reggae,
The bluebeats also have a lot of skinhead reggae, though some of its
rocksteady.

well, they've been back for at least a good 2 years, i believe, and they
haven't "started over again." at least a couple of them are doing stuff
by themselves; that 'banana crusher' song on the last steady beat comp.
was done by one of them, and another one of them works at this music
store downtown and he said a while back he was trying to get his home
studio finished up and stuff.
