My choice=Michael McDermott - Skinnerbox
Bates
Dave S.
Lloyd Knibb - he practically invented the ska beat
Ted Moll - his drumming ALWAYS makes me feel the beat.

Is that the guy with the knappy hair? If so, I'd have to agree, or at least
give him quite a bit of credit. When I saw them tonight, I was watching him and
going, "Damn, I ought to start a best drummer thread on ams, because this guy
is good."

It's interesting that someone else posted that ska drumming is boring.
There's nothing more or less boring about ska drumming than any other
drumming. You can decide to play just about whatever you choose. Most
ska drummers play fairly interesting things compared to the average song.
Besides, unless you're frickin' Dave
Weckle, Dennis Chambers, or the imfamous Niel Peart, drummers that try
things that are supper crazy have a tendency to make the music sound
slopy...especially live. An average drummer goin' out of his way to be
unique and interesting often lags or rushes the time so much that the
band ends up sounding pretty bad.
Some people don't mind, or seem to care about timing, but in the
end it is very important for a good solid sound. y

Yeah, although Lloyd Knibbs has set the standard of original ska drumming,
I also agree with Bates on this one... Michael McDermott is definitly a
good drummer and has made Skinnerbox one of the better bands that it is.

His lack of fills is what makes him so good. He just sits waaaaaay back on
the beat and grooves. The hi hat provides all his dynamics because of his
laid back style, he's not about hammering out the beat and rocking out. He
gives more of a jazz drumming approach to ska.
